Partner spotlight!

For 15 years, Veterans Yoga Project has been helping veterans and military families find healing, resilience, and connection through trauma-informed yoga and mindfulness practices. They create safe, supportive spaces where veterans can work through challenges such as post-traumatic stress, chronic pain, anxiety, and depression, all while building community and connecting with others.

We’re honored to support the incredible work they’ve done to uplift the veteran community over the past decade and a half. Here’s to 15 years of healing, hope, and resilience, and many more to come.

Before he was a decorated war hero, Hector “Hec” Kilrea was a three-time Stanley Cup champion whose speed on the ice earned him the nickname “Hurricane.”

The hockey star tried to enlist in the Canadian Army in World War II but was deemed too old since he was already in his 30s.

Uncle Sam accepted him, though, so Kilrea traded in his skates for a U.S. Army uniform and joined the 36th Infantry Division. He fought in the Battle of Anzio in Italy and the invasion of Southern France, where Kilrea suffered a shoulder wound. He returned to action and was eventually transferred to the Belgian front.

In December 1944, armed with a bazooka, he repeatedly ran alone into a street, firing at a German tank. Despite being under intense enemy fire, Kilrea’s actions forced the tank and accompanying troops to retreat. The next day, he crawled within 50 feet of the tank and destroyed it.

For his bravery in combat, Kilrea was awarded the Distinguished Service Cross — the second-highest military decoration in the U.S. Army. He also received the Purple Heart and French Croix de Guerre.

Heroism and hockey both ran deep in the Kilrea family. Hec was the eldest of three hockey-playing brothers who entered the armed forces.

Nine former Army soldiers received Purple Hearts last week after being wounded two decades ago while serving with the 101st Airborne Division.

Six of the recipients were wounded in a May 2003 gr***de attack by a fellow soldier in Kuwait, and three were hurt during combat in 2006 in Iraq.

Secretary of War Pete Hegseth awarded the "long overdue" medals during a visit to the 101st Airborne Division's home of Fort Campbell, Kentucky.

"[This is] a follow-through … meant to showcase inside our formations, to these families, to these soldiers, to the media, to the nation, that these things are important,” Hegseth said. “We value them. We value them so much that the secretary wants to fly down here to personally pin these on, long overdue. Actions taken, merit shown, in some cases years and decades ago that should have been recognized and celebrated.”

This Memorial Day, we pause to honor the Americans who gave everything so that freedom could endure.

As our nation prepares to mark 250 years of independence, we cannot separate the celebration of freedom from the sacrifice that made it possible. Every flag raised, every family gathering, every quiet moment of peace rests on the courage of those who never came home.

Freedom stands on sacrifice.

Honor Their Service 250 is a call to remember with more than words. It is a call to act; to stand with Purple Heart recipients, veterans, and families who continue to carry the cost of service long after the uniform comes off.

This Memorial Day, let gratitude become action.

Support the Purple Heart Foundation and help us continue serving those who served, sacrificed, and still need us today.

Spc. Patricia Fowler receives her Purple Heart in 2010 for wounds sustained in action while deployed in support of Operation Enduring Freedom.

Fowler was a crew member of a chase helicopter on a medevac mission when the aircraft came under enemy fire while flying over Helmand province. Five rounds hit the aircraft, and one of them ricocheted off the window frame and struck her helmet, leaving an entry and an exit hole. She sustained head trauma from the impact of the bullet and shrapnel that embedded in her left shoulder.

Companionship, Opportunity, Stability, and Healing. These are the four pillars key to everything the Purple Heart Foundation does.

As America celebrates 250 years of freedom and independence, we've set an ambitious goal of raising $250,000 to help veterans obtain service dogs and companion animals, respond to immediate financial hardships, pursue vocational training, and promote physical and mental healing.

Will you help us continue this mission?

Sgt. Reckless wasn’t a typical Marine. This small but fearless war horse became a legend during the Korean War.

Reckless was trained to carry heavy ammunition across some of the most dangerous terrain on the battlefield. She proved her courage almost immediately, adapting to the chaos of combat and learning supply routes so well, she could travel them alone. Her most remarkable moment came during the Battle of Outpost Vegas in March 1953, where she made 51 solo trips in a single day, carrying more than 9,000 pounds of ammunition in total across 35 miles of dangerous ground. Despite being wounded twice by enemy fire, she never stopped, continuing her mission to support the Marines who depended on her.

For her extraordinary service, Sergeant Reckless was awarded two Purple Hearts and numerous other honors, including the Marine Corps Good Conduct Medal.

A 1962 executive order from President John F. Kennedy officially excluded military animals from receiving the Purple Heart, but Sgt. Reckless reminds us that heroism comes in many forms.
