Statement on the Revocation of Oscar Arias’ U.S. Visa

EPS strongly deplores the decision to revoke the U.S. visa of former Costa Rican President and Nobel laureate Oscar Arias, who is a member of our Board of Trustees. This action, taken without explanation, raises serious concerns about the treatment of a globally respected elder statesman who has dedicated his life to peace, democracy, and diplomacy.

The absence of transparency in this decision is troubling, particularly given President Arias’ history of principled leadership and his commitment to independent thought. Disagreements on foreign policy or political perspective should not lead to punitive measures against individuals who have made significant contributions to international peace and stability.

We urge U.S. authorities to uphold the values of open dialogue, democratic engagement, and respect for global leaders who have worked to foster cooperation in the world, and to restore President Arias’ visa immediately.
