During our recent GPR (Ground Penetrating Radar) work at the cemetery, we found a complete plate of an individual that was unknown, until recent research established this individual to be buried at Warden Cemetery. The original plate was buried about six inches under the soil. When we found that we were missing a letter in the name and one numerical digit, we asked Scoggins Funeral Home for some help to replace the missing data and they brought us a completely new plate. So a big thank you to them for that kindness. Now, Mr. Coulson can be identified with a clear location along side his close relatives.

We were able to have Warden Cemetery mapped using ground radar so we could start identifying more unknown burials within our grounds with crosses. It will be a slow process getting the crosses made, but we will start making more of them as we are able to now. The unknowns are here mostly due to a cemetery fire many, many years ago that burned the wooden markers.

John and Louisa Warden donated a portion of their land for a free burying ground for anyone living in the local area. This was started when a family traveling through the country in a covered wagon from Arkansas had stopped at the Warden farm and was picking cotton for Mr. Warden. The man’s wife became sick and died while there. The man didn’t know what to do about buring his wife, so Mr. Warden said to the man, “we will start a graveyard here on my farm.“ No one knows the date of her death or the names of the people and now her grave has been lost.

Sadly, John Warden’s wife, Louisa J. Warden, was the second to be buried in Warden Cemetery in March of 1860. At the time, this burial plot was only identified as a large brown stone. However, in July of 2024, local residents generously had a headstone made and donated to Warden Cemetery in honor of the Patrick D. Mahoney Memorial Fund, marking this early pioneer in the Texas landscape.

In May we had another bad storm and it took down our Pear Tree.

We had our Annual meeting a couple of weeks earlier and talked about trying to get a few more trees, donated if possible, to replace the ones we’ve lost.

It’s always sad for us when we lose an old tree after so long.

Just had some gorgeous white metal crosses made and placed for a few Unknown graves.
Such an amazing job on the crosses and our grounds keeper works wonders on the placement.

Last night, June 15, 2023, Collin County had a severe thunderstorm. We hope everyone came through it safely.

We had several trees that were severely damaged. We ask that you bear with us while we go through the clean-up process. We are thankful that none of the headstones or markers were damaged.

The last storm caused a tree to fall and we needed some work/clean-up at the cemetery. We are blessed and thankful for the work that Dirt and Things, LLC was able to accomplish.
