Atlas update ๐พ
This sweet boy is continuing to make slow but meaningful progress. ๐
Heโs still very shy and nervous, but heโs allowing pets more consistently now and is becoming more comfortable with foster mom being around his space. The smaller crate setup seems to be helping him feel safer overall.
When nobody is focusing directly on him, heโs starting to come out on his own to eat, grab treats, chew on bones, and observe the other animals around him. He really seems to enjoy being around both cats and dogs, and their presence appears to help boost his confidence and comfort level. ๐ถ๐ฑ
The biggest improvement lately is that his aggression has significantly decreased. Heโs still fearful, but the lack of growling and reactive behavior is a HUGE step for Atlas and shows that he is trying.
Weโve also been giving calming treats, and we plan to restart Alprazolam soon since it seemed to help him greatly with his anxiety.
Weโre also hoping to get Atlas neutered soon and started on vaccines so he can heal up and continue moving forward with his progress. Heโs already on flea/tick and heartworm prevention. Weโre hopeful that once neutered, it may help him settle a little more too. ๐ค
At this time, we would not want to move Atlas to a different foster home until after he is neutered and fully healed up, as another major transition right now could set back some of the progress heโs made.
However, if there is anyone experienced with fearful dogs who may be interested in helping Atlas in the future and can commit more one-on-one time to him, please consider applying to foster. He is NOT a dog for first-time dog owners or inexperienced handlers. He needs someone patient, experienced, and understanding of fearful/reactive dogs.
He still has a long road ahead, but slow progress is still progress โ and weโre proud of every little step he takes. ๐
