Sixteen years ago, Mr. George Shirley and his former student and mentee, Dr. Louise Toppin, founded the George Shirley Competition dedicated to the preservation and enrichment of the African American song. The competition first began with high school students and a $1,000 top prize—it has since grown to include five divisions and more than $48,000 in awards. The competition is open to students and performers of all backgrounds.

We are deeply grateful to all who have supported these talented young artists over the years, thank you for being part of this journey.

As we look ahead, we’ve launched an endowment to ensure the competition continues to inspire future generations. Our goal is to raise $2 million, and we invite you to help during our birthday season (March- Louise Toppin; April - Mr. Shirley and May - GSVC).

Through June 30, the University of Michigan will match all new monthly gifts dollar-for-dollar (up to $100/month for 12 months). If 500 people gave $1,200 for the year through that program, we would raise a million dollars. Contributions of any size are greatly appreciated.

If you’re ever in Ann Arbor during the competition, we hope you’ll join us. Thank you for your support!

Our pre-professional competitors came ready to impress—with focus, passion, and undeniable skill. But every now and then, they let loose and remind us that joy is just as powerful as discipline.
Today, these gentlemen showed us both sides: the drive to excel and the heart to have fun. And we loved every moment of it!

Within GSVC the vocal competitors are within many of the divisions. However we, also have a dedicated division for the composers of which the pieces sung by the vocalist are created. Every year these composers continue to provide our judges with amazing pieces, that touch their hearts and soul.

We are about halfway through the competition and our composers division is well under way. This sounds like a good time to highlight another great composer chosen by our competitors. We are now looking at Undine Eliza Anna Smith Moore. (Photo credit https://www.musicbyblackcomposers.org/)

Undine Eliza Anna Smith Moore (25 August 1904 – 6 February 1989), the "Dean of Black Women Composers", was an American composer and professor of music in the twentieth century. Moore was originally trained as a classical pianist, but developed a compositional output of mostly vocal music—her preferred genre. Much of her work was inspired by black spirituals and folk music. During today’s competition the divisions will be running simultaneously, our staff and judges have their work cut out for them. As do the contestants. In preparation for this competition contestants are requires to choose a composer and a song to perform. Through out the day we will highlight a few of these composers. Our first is Henry T. Burleigh.

Harry Burleigh (born Henry Thacker Burleigh, December 2, 1866 – September 12, 1949) was an American classical composer, arranger, and professional singer known for his baritone voice. The first black composer who was instrumental in developing characteristically American music, Burleigh made black music available to classically trained artists both by introducing them to spirituals and by arranging spirituals in a more classical form.
