What will healthcare look like in 10 or 15 years?

🏠 More care delivered in the home ⌚ Connected devices and real-time monitoring 🤖 AI-supported decision-making 💡 More proactive interventions 🤝 Seamless patient experiences

There’s one thing every one of these ambitions has in common: they depend on interoperability.

In this article for Health Data Management, HL7 CEO Rachel Dunscombe explores why interoperability is moving beyond the Health IT department and into the boardroom. She also examines how the ability to exchange, govern, and trust data is increasingly shaping what healthcare organizations can accomplish.

The Australian Digital Health Agency has established AU Core and the Australian Core Data for Interoperability (AU CDI) as the national baseline for HL7 FHIR® connections to My Health Record — helping create a more consistent and reliable foundation for health information exchange across the country.

In a recent interview with The Mirage, HL7 CEO Rachel Dunscombe highlighted Australia’s approach as a strong model for advancing interoperability at a national scale.

By pairing internationally adopted HL7 FHIR standards with nationally agreed implementation guidance and a clear path forward, Australia is demonstrating what’s possible when global standards and national alignment come together.
Congratulations to the Australian Digital Health Agency and the broader Australian interoperability community on this important milestone!

Healthcare is investing heavily in AI—but are we investing enough in the people needed to make it work?

In a new MedCity News article, HL7 International CEO Rachel Dunscombe explores why the future of healthcare AI depends not only on technology, but also on building a workforce with expertise in interoperability, data governance, implementation, infrastructure and workflow design.

As AI moves from pilots to real-world healthcare environments, having the right people and skills in place will be critical to turning innovation into meaningful, sustainable change.

Most younger professionals entering the workforce have little visibility into interoperability, digital health infrastructure, or healthcare data architecture as career pathways.

Through instructor-led lectures, hands-on exercises, and real-world scenarios, you'll learn how to:
✅ Map V2 messages to FHIR resources
✅ Apply terminology mapping
✅ Create and validate mapping sheets
✅ Explore open-source tools that support the mapping process

You'll gain the confidence to move beyond the specifications and apply what you've learned to your own interoperability projects.
