Federal funding cuts impact education in Michigan
Today, Planned Parenthood of Michigan made the difficult decision to end its education department.?
PPMI has faced a barrage of attacks from the Trump administration and other politicians hostile to reproductive health care, including being prohibited from receiving Medicaid reimbursement for the care we provide to patients and a reduction in federal family planning through Title X funding. Together, these changes resulted in PPMI receiving approximately $5.2 million less revenue in FY26 than it received the prior year.
We have pursued multiple paths to close this funding gap, including expanding fundraising efforts, streamlining operations, and working with state leaders to explore potential stabilization options. While the generosity of our supporters and the dedication of our staff have helped lessen the impact, no funding solution has emerged that can fully offset the magnitude of this impact.?
To ensure Planned Parenthood of Michigan can continue providing critical health services for years to come, we are examining every aspect of our organization and making difficult decisions about what work we can sustainably support.
This is one of those decisions, and the education department, comprised of 11 positions, has been eliminated.
We are profoundly grateful to our educators for their years of work building youth and adult peer education programs, parent and community workshops, school partnerships, LGBTQ-specific sexual health education, professional trainings, and community programming throughout Michigan. We are also grateful to the peer educators, volunteers, funders, and partners who have invested in this work alongside us, and we will be in direct conversation with those who have supported it.
We know the loss of our education programs and staff will be felt deeply in our communities, especially by those whose lives have been shaped by this work. We feel that loss as well.
Education remains part of our mission. Education that is delivered to patients during clinical interactions has always been part of clinical staff responsibilities and remains unchanged. PPMI continues to meet its Title X requirements for patient education and its accreditation standards. If you have questions about your sexual and reproductive health, our clinicians are here to offer the accurate, nonjudgmental information you deserve.
Planned Parenthood has been around for more than 100 years, in many different forms. The Trump administration is forcing us to make painful but necessary changes, and we are making them to ensure we can overcome these attacks and be here for another 100 years, continuing to provide critical medical care.
That work has always been made possible by your support, and it is what we are working to safeguard now.
We are grateful for your continued support as we work to protect access to care for Michigan patients.
With gratitude and resolve,
Paula Thornton Greear (she/her)
