Beautiful ☀️ sunny northern Michigan day for our 6th People’s Power Tour, in Traverse City with Kyle Blomquist for Congress.

Kyle brings a sincerity and an energy that is motivating and contagious, and our attendees today left to canvass/door knock with lots of enthusiasm.

Today is an important national holiday; Juneteenth. ♥️💛💚🖤

It commemorates the day on June 19, 1865, (two years after the Emancipation Proclamation) when Union troops arrived in Galveston Bay, Texas and announced that the more than 250,000 enslaved Black people in the state were free by executive decree.

150+ years later, and our country is in a truly challenging place, with many of the freedoms that were so hard-fought evening clawed back.

Let’s take Juneteenth as an opportunity, especially for non-Black folks, to find intentional ways to be in solidarity & lock arms with our Black siblings across the state. ✊🏾✊🏿✊🏼

We are proud to announce our enthusiastic endorsement of Tonya Myers Phillips for State Representative, House District 7.

State Representative Tonya Myers Phillips is serving her first term representing House District 7 (HD 7), which includes central Detroit, northeast Detroit, and the cities of Hamtramck and Highland Park.

Phillips is an attorney and leader who has dedicated her life to eliminating the systemic barriers that disproportionately impact the poor and working class. Born and raised in the city of Detroit,
Phillips returned to her community after receiving her bachelor’s and law degrees from the University of Michigan. She has worked with community members and organizations to advocate for government accountability, protect constitutional rights and civil liberties, advance workers’ rights, and expand economic rights and the social safety net for poor and working-class people.

Equipped with over 25 years of community advocacy and legal experience, Phillips is committed to fostering relationships between grassroots leaders and the State Legislature. She understands the relationship between grassroots advocacy and policymaking. Phillips prioritizes policies that strengthen the social safety net, foster equitable economic development, create and protect affordable housing, advance environmental justice, and increase access to justice so that all Michiganders, regardless of income, can access the legal system to advocate for themselves.

We wholeheartedly endorse Tonya Myers Phillips for State Representative HD 7, and we encourage all residents of HD 7 to mobilize and support her campaign.

The People’s Coalition is relieved that the potential ICE detention warehouse in Romulus will not move forward and that DHS plans to sell the site. This victory is the result of relentless organizing, advocacy, and direct action by community members, grassroots organizations, local officials, and state leaders who stood united against this harmful proposal.

We were proud to join the efforts by signing the Shut the Camps letter and organizing alongside residents and partner organizatins, including Coalition to Shut the Camps, Downriver United 734 Indivisible, and Workers Against Oppression to stop this project. The People's Coalition remains firmly opposed to deportation, family separation, and immigrant detention. We will continue to monitor this site and stand ready to act if any similar proposal emerges.

We are proud to announce our wholehearted endorsement of Sarah Pounds for State Representative, House District 54.

Sarah Pounds is a housing advocate, and community leader. A lifelong Oakland County resident and mother of four daughters, Pounds is running to bring practical, family-focused leadership to Lansing and believes Michigan needs more parents and working professionals shaping state policy.

Pounds brings more 20 years of experience as a paralegal in construction litigation, giving her firsthand experience navigating complex regulatory systems and government processes. She is the founder of YIMBY Oakland County, where she served on the board until 2025, and currently serves on the Oakland County Community Development Advisory Council and Housing Trust Fund Board, where she helps oversee the investment of tens of millions of dollars in housing and community development.

Her campaign centers on the issues families discuss around their kitchen tables: lowering everyday costs, strengthening public schools, expanding affordable housing, and ensuring Michigan’s economy creates opportunity for the next generation. Pounds is part of a new wave of leaders focused on moving Michigan forward with pragmatic solutions shaped by real-world experience.

People’s Power Civic Action Tour #5 - Lansing edition! 

We have several endorsed candidates in the Lansing area, including William Lawrence for Congress in CD 7, Elect TyJuan Thirdgill for HD 74, and Emily Dievendorf for HD 77! We were excited to be joined by TyJyan Thirdgill and team today, as well as Will Lawrence’s team.

🗳️ We talked about importance of the August 4th primary, why voting in this August election is so crucial, and then we got to hear from the candidates/campaigns.
