Southern Michigan Orienteering Club

Southern Michigan Orienteering Club The orienteering club in southern Michigan SMOC holds orienteering events largely in the metropolitan Detroit area.

Using hyper detailed, pre marked topographical maps, participants navigate to a series of checkpoints denoted by orange and white flags. How you get between them is entirely up to you! Take the long way around on trails...go straight up over the hill...you decide! Run flat out through the woods to try to win one of the expert courses, enjoy a family / friendly hike with a twist...that choice is also yours!

Thanks to the Greens for hosting summery courses at Maybury State Park! Mercifully visibility went way up and smokiness way down from the last few days to enable us to join the other outdoorsy folks finally getting out at the venue.

Thanks also to our flag pickup crew: BJ, Julie, Orgun, Igor, Steve, and Tony. Thanks to Barbara for setup help, lessons, and cold water!

Maybury has proven to be one of our most versatile venues, from its initial proof of concept training, to regular point to point, to frequent Merry Mayhem home, to night o, score o, mini adventure race, and marriage counseling events, and Saturday adds yet another format to its roster, as three summery courses are available, either as part of the youth o competition or general at large fun.

All are welcome, age-wise or experience-wise!

Also, enjoy several bonus orienteering games.

Please sign up by Thursday night as it will be cozy to get flags and maps ready Friday for Saturday AM, especially as some of you will probably aim for the earlier end to beat the heat!

More events to follow this summer!

Adalia is in Slovenia, helping to manage and coach the EYOC OUSA team, with competition starting today!

Anna is training in Sweden right now for the JWOC OUSA team!

If you'd like to see what Swedish terrain looks like, here is a video of some of Anna's teammates training, with an embedded map and gps track alongside the terrain footage. Michelle reports the water features are largely dry, which might affect what they do versus someone used to knee deep muck. :)

In a sea of second screens trained on the World Cup this week, my extra monitor will be on the Endless Mountains adventure race, featuring a ton of SMOC folks - Angel, BJ, Adam, and Brenda on Team #108, Lost Arrow Sports, and Barbara and Brad on Team #105, Cherubini Brothers AR.

Dots should start moving around 10 am Monday here and continue through Saturday 10 am:

This year the full course is something like 350 miles spread over 1.5 dozen stages of bike, hike, paddle and who knows what else. Working through the course outline is enough to inspire a nap!

That's a wrap! Our 2026 Spring Forest Season has ended, with fun courses at Waterloo HQ (and homemade bread!) courtesy of Jess. Warm temps and lower visibility made for a challenge, as did "double dipping" for the hearty folks who did a very hilly and sandy Muskegon Edition adventure race on Saturday and scurried back in time for some orienteering on Sunday.

Thank you to a helpful flag pickup crew - Grace, Yeki, Steve, Adam, Igor, Cooper, Anna and Alex divided up the retrieval ensuring future events!

See you in six weeks at Maybury State Park, for short, medium, or long courses, each with varying ratios of summer-friendly parkland to forest excursions. This will be a great intro event for your orienteering-curious friends, and especially young folks with a variety of orienteering games on hand!

The last epic woodsy orienteering until the fall is this Sunday at Waterloo HQ! With access to huge hills near Crooked Lake, ambiguous intermittent marsh land to the NW, trail zig zags and rocky small depression confusion north of the headquarters, and more gentle terrain such as the farm fields or woods off towards the Discovery Center, there is sure to be variety and route choice.

Not all courses will be as tricky as Brown, Green or Red - our beginner friendly options will get you started in the sport and then you can try again in a little while at the Maybury summer event in mid July.

Be sure to sign up by Thursday night so we can order the right number of maps!

Our spring season finale is this Sunday at Waterloo Rec Headquarters!

Choose from beginner-friendly through very expert courses. Jess reports that with 95% leaf out, Brown, Green, and Red will not be for the faint of heart - expect them to be harder than a late fall or early spring event thanks to reduced visibility. You may need to rely on direction and distance more than usual, and you will definitely want to go to circle center rather than glancing from afar and hoping to spot a flag!

Please sign up by Thursday night - the print order will be sent that night shortly after 11 pm. See you there!

Thank you to BJ and Julie for hosting us at Island Lake! And congratulations to anyone who got to or home from the venue, with the various ramp closures and construction. Did anyone end up with a scenic driving tour of Kensington Metro Park?

Thanks also to the flag pickup crew, who made sure BJ could catch his work flight not long after course closure.

Experts flailed and floundered a bit on de-trailed portions of the map, resulting in lots of lead changes in the splits:

LiveLox carnage is here. Do not let the LiveLox map fool you; Brown, Green and Red did not get quite as much info west of the park road!

Our 2nd to last spring event is Sunday at Island Lake! Alert Strava stalkers figured out BJ has at least seven total miles of flags across all of the courses, although we wager the courses themselves will be roughly their typical lengths:

White/Beginner - 1-2 miles
Yellow/Intermediate - 2-3 miles
Orange/Advanced - 3-4 miles
Brown/Expert Short - 3-4 miles
Green/Expert - 4-5 miles
Red/Expert Long - 5-7 miles

This assumes you don't...add any detours....

Please sign up by Thursday 11 pm to help us get ready for you and you can avoid late fees. We have run out of preferred courses recently for late registrants as we do make the print order off the Thursday night registrations.

See you there!
