In this class, students will learn some history of natural dyeing, the chemistry of dyes, mordants, after treatments, and more. They will dye some yarn, silk, and fabric with several different dyes, some that can grow or be foraged locally and some from others places around the globe. Students will go home with a basic knowledge of natural dyeing so they can continue their investigations on their own and will have dye samples from the dyes they used.

Students will begin with a hickory "bow blank" that is ready for them to start hand tooling. They will be introduced to the ancient art of tillering, learn the fundamentals of woodworking, using tools efficiently, and tapping into their ability to “read” the wood. By the end of the course students will have made their own wooden longbow and if time and weather cooperate, will have the opportunity to practice shooting techniques.
