What happens when phosphorus already stored in agricultural stream sediments is released back into the water?

In the latest issue of Lakes Letter, Grace Watson explores how summer warming, low flows, and nighttime oxygen depletion can mobilize phosphorus from streambed sediments in the Maumee River watershed, potentially adding an important source of nutrients that can fuel downstream algal blooms.

Watson’s research was supported by IAGLR’s 2026 David M. Dolan Scholarship, which recognizes graduate research using statistics, mathematical modeling, data analysis, and quantitative tools to advance understanding and management of Great Lakes ecosystems.

What will the next generation inherit and how can we prepare them to steward the Great Lakes?

In the latest Lakes Letter, Hassan Ezzeddine, Ali Iqbal, and Abigail Wallace share their experiences working with the Great Lakes Environmental Advocacy Collaboratory (GLEAC), where students, researchers, and environmental advocates are working across disciplines to connect science with policy and action.

From exploring new technologies like AI and Python to survey design, stakeholder engagement, and collaborative governance, their experiences show that preparing the next generation of Great Lakes professionals goes far beyond the classroom.

As the authors remind us, the future of the Great Lakes will depend not only on the science we produce, but also on the relationships we build.
