Sharing your story is a powerful tool in su***de prevention. 💙
An AFSP-funded study by Jane Harness, D.O. analyzed filmed interviews of individuals who came close to su***de yet did not make an attempt. The research showed that participants felt understood, more hopeful, or more likely to seek help after viewing.

Did you know this?
When referring to someone who has killed themselves, it’s better to say they have “died by su***de” instead of saying they “committed su***de”. This small change in language has a huge impact in saving lives!
Research has shown that the term “committed” has a negative connotation associated with it, making people who have suicidal thoughts feel guilty for how they are feeling. If they feel like they will be greeting with shame instead of comfort and understanding when reaching out for help, they may never take the necessary steps in getting help.
If you’ve used the phrase “committed su***de”, it’s okay! Safe language is something we have to learn about. Moving forward, if you are talking about someone who has lost their life to su***de, try talking about it without the harsh word of “committed”. You never know who around you will notice and appreciate your care in safe language! 💕

On , we honor and remember those who gave their lives in service. 💙 As we reflect, we also recognize the families, friends, fellow service members, and communities who carry their memory. If someone in your life is grieving the loss of a service member, consider reaching out to let them know you’re thinking of them. These simple gestures can reinforce connection and support through moments of remembrance, even from a distance.

According to the CDC's data on su***de risk within occupational groups, the construction and extraction industries were found to have the highest rate of su***de in the United States. The goal of our Construction Hike for Hope initiative is to improve the mental health of construction workers through effective su***de prevention education, intervention and postvention strategies to encourage, equip and empower mental health champions in the workforce. 6,398 veterans died by su***de in 2023. 💙

That's why the Improving Servicemember Transition to Reduce Veteran Su***de Act is a 2026 Advocacy Forum Legislative Priority.

The bill will help prevent su***de by enabling veterans to recognize su***de risk factors and seek behavioral health support. By educating service members and veterans as they separate from the Armed Forces, we can help them seek care, support their mental health and help prevent su***de.

In 2024, 12.8 million adults experienced serious thoughts of su***de in the United States. 💙

The STOP Su***de Act — a 2026 Advocacy Forum Legislative Priority — establishes a competitive grant program within the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) to support su***de specific stabilization services for individuals experiencing serious thoughts of su***de. In other words, the STOP Su***de Act ensures that when someone needs help at a vulnerable moment, they receive care designed to save their life.
