Michigan Prison Doula Initiative

Michigan Prison Doula Initiative We provide childbirth education and birth support for women who are incarcerated in Michigan.

There are more mothers in prison now, in America, than any other place and time in history. The realities of mass incarceration, the war on drugs, long and indeterminate sentencing, and reluctance to provide alternatives to incarceration has led to the dissolution of the American family—particularly in communities of color and poverty. The result has been devastated communities, financial ruin, an

d what amounts to state-mandated separation and neglect. We have created a generation of children more likely to enter the prison system because their family members were not there to mitigate the effects of growing up in a racist, classist society. The Michigan Prison Doula Initiative seeks to intervene on some of these disturbing realities at the time when mothers are most vulnerable—while pregnant and in prison. Through childbirth and nutritional education, prenatal and labor support, and postpartum visitation coordinating efforts, our organization hopes to strengthen the bond between children and their incarcerated mothers, efforts which have elsewhere been proven to reduce recidivism rates and help reintegrate mothers back into their families and communities upon release.

MPDI clients need us more than ever.

MPDI does not get state funding and depends on donors to support our clients free of charge. Any contribution you give today makes an extraordinary difference. They are counting on us all.

One recent MPDI client shared “the doulas mean more to me than they may know… They help make our voices heard and help advocate for us in the hospital while establishing and maintaining a peaceful and positive environment.”

DONATE monthly or once HERE: https://mpdi.org/donate

Her words reflect what MPDI doulas do every day: help clients prepare for birth, understand their options, communicate with medical staff, feel respected, and navigate pregnancy and postpartum with care rather than judgment. In a setting where people may feel isolated or unheard, MPDI helps ensure that no one has to give birth alone.

We also know that recent deaths at Women’s Huron Valley have caused grief, concern, and urgent questions for families, advocates, and communities across Michigan. While MPDI cannot speak to the circumstances of those losses, we can say clearly that moments like this make sustained, respectful, person-centered support even more essential. Our doulas enter this work with humility, care, and a commitment to helping pregnant and postpartum people feel seen, heard, and supported during one of the most vulnerable times in their lives.

Your gift helps make this work possible. Donations support prenatal education, one-on-one doula visits, labor and birth support, postpartum care, and the continued presence of trained doulas for pregnant and postpartum people inside Michigan’s women’s prison.

Please consider making a donation today to Michigan Prison Doula Initiative. Your support helps provide compassionate birth and parenting support when it is needed most. From the bottom of our hearts, the entire MPDI family thanks you!

"Mama was my greatest teacher, a teacher of compassion, love, and fearlessness. If love is sweet as a flower, then my mother is that sweet flower of love." —Stevie Wonder

The Michigan Prison Doula Initiative doula team makes impossibly difficult circumstances more manageable. Through there compassion and thoughtful care, MPDI's doulas help our clients through the prenatal period, the birth experience, and the critical postpartum period when the moms are separated from their babies. During this agonizing time, doulas work hard to help the mothers focus on their release versus their pain. We are grateful to be part of a nationwide effort to support perinatal prisoners, including the Ostara Initiative, the Minnesota Prison Doula Project, and the Surge Reproductive Justice EmPath Project.

Because of donors like you, MPDI provides client-centered, trauma-informed care, free of charge. Please consider donating to MPDI in honor of the wonderful Mother(s) in your life.

Happy Mother's Day from the Michigan Prison Doula Initiative's clients, board, staff, and doula team!
