In a year that challenged creativity, motivation, and community, our creators each found ways to push the boundaries of creativity, branching into fields both new to themselves and Shift itself.

Dear Shift Family,

Shift Creator Space was founded on the basis of equal opportunity with the goal to provide each member with the freedom for creative expression. We aim to offer a safe space for members to speak their mind, rely on one another, and the ability to call ourselves a family. In the past fourteen days, we’ve seen a rapid push to recognize one’s own privileges, including those that surpass racial boundaries.

This past week has served as a stark reminder of the injustices and systemic racism that pervades our society. We mourn the deaths of George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, Ahmaud Arbery, and so many others and acknowledge the trauma inflicted upon the black community by institutional racism. We stand in solidarity with the Black Lives Matter movement and with our black brothers and sisters at the University. We hear you and we support you. Our stand alone is not enough — we must take mindful action to enforce anti-racism within our community.

Our values –– respect, equality, candor, community –– guide us to take action against racism and actively perpetuate an all-inclusive culture.

Engage in open conversation with one other. Be there for one another. Advocate for your friends who are members of the black community. We have attached resources you may refer to if you’d like to educate yourself and contribute to the BLM movement. We encourage you to donate to supporting organizations, sign petitions, and contact representatives. We are hosting an open conversation Zoom for creators to engage in a dialogue about the civil climate, share feelings & opinions, and offer support to one another **this Saturday at 5pm EST**. We are here to listen and support each and every one of you.

We've just wrapped up an incredible year and we're excited to announce our virtual 2020 Project Showcase! Our creators made over two dozen creative projects ranging from startups to games to art. We couldn't be more proud of how everything turned out.

With ideas scattered across the entire domain of creativity, Shift had an amazing and diverse year of self-guided projects from a small group of talented undergraduate creators at the University of Michigan.
