Blueberries were first cultivated commercially in Michigan in the 1920s after MSU horticulture professor Stanley Johnson set up test plots throughout the Lower and Upper Peninsulas. He discovered that blueberries thrived, particularly in the sandy soils near Lake Michigan, and his work over the following decades would position MSU as a nationwide leader in production.

Today, Michigan’s blueberry industry contributes more than $529 million in economic activity annually, and MSU helps every step of the way.

"I’m biased, of course, but I think the small fruit team at MSU is the best in the nation, if not the world, in terms of the services they provide to our communities and farmers,” says Nancy Nyquist, executive director of the Michigan Blueberry Commission. "MSU has its hands on the industry in so many ways, and it’s really phenomenal.”

Our thanks to Valisa Bristle, her daughter Harlee, and Kim Mahrle for presenting about the exciting opportunities available in Agriculture Careers. The Career Fair was held at the Saline High School on Wednesday evening April 29th. Our volunteers spoke with students and parents, and passed out informational brochures.

"From science and technology to communications and skilled trades, agriculture offers rewarding career paths for students with a wide range of interests.
Opportunity Awaits
Each year, there are an estimated 54,400 job openings in agriculture for individuals with four-year or advanced degrees—not including the growing demand for skilled trade professionals.
Yet only about 55% of those jobs are expected to be filled by graduates of agriculture, life sciences, natural resources, or veterinary programs. That means students with agricultural training have a competitive edge."
