Obituary for Carl Johann Sauer
Carl Johann Sauer of Broomfield, Colorado died unexpectantly on February 2nd, 2025. Carl had a big laugh, a gentle heart, and was always willing to help a friend. His passing has left a giant void in the hearts of his family, friends, and colleagues.
Carl was born on September 24, 1980, in Ann Arbor, Michigan. He is survived by his loving wife, Kristine, their sons, Carl-II and Evan, his parents, brothers, their wives and his nephews. He will be lovingly remembered by them and the many friends whose lives he touched.
Carl was a creative, gentle, and soft-hearted child. From early on, it was clear Carl was brilliant and gifted. But his gifts came with challenges. Carl was learning disabled and had trouble writing as a young boy. He overcame these disabilities and graduated from Community High School with Honors. During high school Carl took college math and engineering courses at the University of Michigan, played trumpet in Community High’s acclaimed Jazz Band, played lacrosse, ice hockey and was a talented photographer taking pictures of friends, family, and nature. Most important, he developed a community of close, lifelong friends.
Carl attended Michigan State’s College of Engineering, from which he graduated with Honors in 2002. He then followed his dream to live near the mountains and moved to Colorado. There he began his career as an electrical engineer at the JILA lab of the University of Colorado where he supported the research of a Nobel Laureat amongst many other accomplishments. He stayed for 17 years making many lifelong friends. After his career at JILA, he joined Honeywell Quantum Solutions, later called Quantinuum, as a Senior Advanced Electrical Engineer and he played a pivotal role in developing cutting-edge quantum computing technologies.
Carl maintained a curiosity and interest in the world. He would spend hours discussing engineering and science issues with friends and colleagues. He built his own high-fidelity speakers and a telescope and spent hours listening to music and exploring the skies. A true renaissance man, Carl was a talented cook of many innovative dishes, and oh the homemade pizzas! He was also a practical engineer, working on his home, repairing cars, including rebuilding Subaru engines, and helping friends and family.
An avid outdoorsman and graduate of the NOLS Wind River Expedition, Carl loved skiing, snowboarding, hiking, backpacking, camping, mountain biking and enjoying everything his beloved Colorado had to offer. Those who travelled with Carl in the backcountry always felt safe, comfortable, and were well fed. There seemed nothing he couldn’t do.
Carl was a dedicated father and husband, a loving brother and son, and a true friend. He was innovative and creative, gentle and kind, quick to laugh, and always ready to lend a hand. He is so dearly missed by all who knew him.
A memorial will be held in the nature area he loved, Saturday, July 19, 2025, 1:30 PM to 3:30 PM at Halfmoon Lake Day Use Facility, 8725 Hankerd Rd, Gregory MI 48137
