ANN ARBOR, Mich. — November 14, 2025 — The Argo Pond community awoke Sunday morning to devastating news: the new dock, a shared asset built through the generosity and hard work of the local rowing community, was severely damaged.

The incident left several dock sections melted and destroyed, causing tens of thousands of dollars in damage. Early indications suggest that the fireworks were set off from the dock, igniting and damaging the structure.

The dock was replaced in June this year after a major community-funded effort led by the Ann Arbor Rowing Club (AARC), University of Michigan Men’s Rowing, and local high school rowing programs at Huron and Pioneer. Collectively, these groups raised nearly $120,000 to replace the aging and unsafe structure, making it a vital resource for both competitive and recreational use. “We are all devastated by the damage to a new community resource, which was a generational improvement. This dock serves as an access point to the river for the entire community and solves many of the problems faced with the old dock,” said Russell Giacobbe, Director of Rowing for the Ann Arbor Rowing Club.

Preliminary assessments indicate that at least five dock sections—and possibly more—will need to be replaced. Repairs and replacement of the damaged sections are expected to cost more than $15,000. This is meant to serve as a community resource for both the rowing clubs and broader public for years to come.

The Ann Arbor Rowing Club and partner organizations are evaluating repair options and exploring ways to fund replacement sections. Community members wishing to contribute to the repair effort can make a tax-deductible donation on the AARC website www.a2crew.com
