Save A Heart - C.S. Mott Children's Hospital

Save A Heart - C.S. Mott Children's Hospital Save A Heart strives to improve the lives of our patients through research and comprehensive care. And it’s a diagnosis that requires lifelong care.

Nearly 1 in 110 babies are born with congenital heart disease, making it the No. 1 birth defect in the nation. Congenital heart disease causes nearly one-third of the infant deaths that result from birth defects. The University of Michigan Health Congenital Heart Center at C.S. Mott Children’s Hospital (www.mottchildren.org), is one of the largest and most experienced pediatric heart programs in t

he U.S. It is also an international referral center for kids with complex congenital heart disease. Our center provides the most advanced care for infants, children, and adolescents with all forms of heart disease, as well as for adults born with congenital heart defects. We aim to lead the way in improving quality of life for patients with heart defects by:
• Creating systems that allow congenital heart survivors to thrive
• Connecting heart centers across the country to enhance standards of care
• Enabling more research and faster discoveries
• Providing personalized medicine
• Developing innovative devices and therapies

❤️ Meet Emily one of our Little Victors from our 2025 calendar. “We knew before she was born that Emily would face her first open-heart surgery just days after she was born. But we never imagined her first heart cath procedure would be during the hour she was born, or the journey the weeks afterward would put us through. Nothing has ever held her back, not even her surprise second open-heart procedure at six months old. Emily brings a smile to everyone she meets and when she’s not “on rounds” you can catch her at gymnastics or baby ballet, learning to shoot hoops with her big brothers, and otherwise conquering the world one step at a time. We will be forever grateful for her incredible team at Mott that did nothing short of saving her life and changing ours forever.” This Heart Month you can support Little Victors like Emily through Save A Heart - C.S. ❤️ Meet Sydney one of our Little Victors from our 2025 calendar. “Sydney was born in November 2023 with a rare congenital heart defect, hypoplastic left heart syndrome. She had her first open-heart surgery hours after being born and two more in the subsequent months. Despite living most of her life within the walls of Mott, Sydney is bursting with joy and is an absolute delight. She brings smiles to all those who meet her. She can be found flanked by her twin sister Riley and big sister Kennedy, watching Ms. Rachel, or playing “hall monitor.” Sydney would like to say thank you to the incredible staff at Mott, including Dr. Romano, Dr. Zampi, the entire PCTU staff, the NP team, Child Life staff, music therapists and the amazing nurses on 11 West.” This Heart Month you can support Little Victors like Sydney through Save A Heart - C.S. ❤️ Meet Victoria, one of our Little Victors from our 2025 calendar. “My husband and I knew from our 20-week anatomy scan that our daughter would be born with a rare and complex medical condition called heterotaxy syndrome, affecting her heart and other organs. This was something neither of us had heard of before, but quickly had to become experts on, as our world was turned upside down. Her original prognosis was not good. It was terminal. We knew we needed to seek out the best doctors, so we came to the cardiologists at Mott who gave us our second opinion. The cardiologists at Mott were more familiar with Victoria's condition and greatly changed the trajectory of her life with a much better prognosis. Victoria's heterotaxy caused several organs to be in wrong places in her body, including having multiple nonfunctioning spleens. Her heterotaxy has also caused multiple defects to her heart, including two VSDs, coarctation of the aorta, a bicuspid aortic valve, an extra SVC and interrupted IVC. Despite having multiple heart defects, Victoria has not yet needed any surgery. Fortunately, she is monitored by her cardiologists regularly to make sure things are still moving forward in a positive direction. We are so grateful Victoria is as healthy as she is because it wasn't always this way. Transferring our care to Mott was the easiest part of having a child with a complex medical condition. Victoria is now 2 months old and doing well despite living with heterotaxy and congenital heart disease.” This Heart Month you can support Little Victors like Victoria through Save A Heart - C.S. ❤️ Meet Jeremiah, one of our Little Victors from our 2025 calendar. “Jeremiah was born in July 2023 at 5 lbs 1 oz. He underwent his first cardiac procedure a week later, which was the hybrid procedure performed by Dr. Zampi and Dr. Lancaster. He spent the first month and a half of his life at Mott due to poor weight gain and minor complications. He then spent the next five months in and out of the hospital for various reasons. In November 2023, Jeremiah underwent his second surgery at Mott for his coarctation of the aorta repair performed by Dr. Ohye, which was followed up with a Thanksgiving celebration in the PCTU. He was diagnosed with his defects at our 20-week anatomy scan and our first fetal echo. Jeremiah is now doing well and is attending daycare with annual visits to the cardiologist.” This Heart Month you can support Little Victors like Jeremiah through Save A Heart - C.S.
