The MTNA Chapter at the University of Michigan is pleased to welcome Dr. Nathan Cheung for several events this week, on March 12 and 13 (Thursday and Friday).
Biography: Dr. Nathan Cheung is known as a daring concert pianist, a cross-genre composer and improviser, and a lively educator. These roles are fueled by a life-long passion to explore music’s potential to resonate with all people.
His performances have taken him to 10 countries and over 30 US states with notable appearances in Carnegie Hall, the Myra Hess Memorial Concerts, and the Chautauqua Institution. He has won top prizes in over 15 international and national competitions, both as a soloist and with his audacious piano duo, Happy Dog Duo. Nathan is also frequently selected by conferences to present his own compositions and research on Dana Suesse.
Nathan is an Instructor of Collaboration at Vanderbilt University’s Blair School of Music and was previously on faculty at Indiana University. He holds a DMA and two MM degrees from the Eastman School of Music, as well as a BA from Stanford University.
March 12, 4:30PM: Improvisation Workshop, Cady Room, Stearns
Aimed towards those with basic keyboard skills to advanced pianists, this workshop explores practical techniques for improvising in a variety of styles. Participants will leave with tools they can immediately apply and continue developing in their own practice.
March 13, 4:30PM: Masterclass with AAAPTG Students
March 13, 6PM: Recital
Short recital featuring works by Liszt, Suesse, Uehara, and original compositions/improvisations by Cheung
