The EMBRace Program

The EMBRace Program Engaging, Managing, and Bonding through Race (EMBRAce) provides African-American families in Detroit Families also receive a gift card for their participation!

EMBRace is an eight-meeting family program that brings African American parents and their children together for conversations about race, cultural pride, discrimination, and stress management. At EMBRace, our goal is to reduce parent and adolescent racial stress, promote bonding for families, and improve psychological well-being. For an hour and a half a week, families with 10 to 14 year old child

ren engage in race-related conversation, something we call "racial socialization". We keep it fun by using different techniques like role-playing, debating, art projects, and media! Not only do families get to spend serious quality time together, but snacks are provided at every session.

EMBRace (Engaging, Managing, and Bonding through Race) is a research program at the University of Michigan with the primary goal of reducing stress among Black families by helping parents and adolescents address difficult topics through race-related dialogue, a technique widely known as racial socialization. Our families participate in 8 sessions and learn about topics like cultural pride, discrimination, and stress management. Overall we hope to reduce racial stress, promote bonding for families, and improve psychological well-being.
