Here are some quick facts about Ecosia from their page:
🌳 It takes approximately 45 searches to finance the planting of one tree.
🌏 Ecosia supports over 20 tree-planting projects in 15 different countries.
🦊 They plant trees in biodiversity hotspots, which are areas which hold particularly high numbers of unique species.
🌲 To increase the chances of their survival, Ecosia always plants varied, local tree species.
⏰ Ecosia only counts trees that will survive for more than three years.
πŸ” Ecosia is powered by Bing (owned by Microsoft), who has committed to cut carbon emissions by 75% in the next 10 years.

In terms of privacy:
πŸ—‘ Ecosia only stores searches for less than a week, then clears them.
❌ They don't sell user data to advertisers.
πŸ”’ They encrypt user searches and don't use external tracking (for the small amount they do track, users can turn off this setting).

Curious about how our campaign was conceived?

It is part of a worldwide initiative between Ecosia and student collectives called Ecosia On Campus! Students advocate for their campuses to make the switch to our eco-friendly search engine and endorse the message that students demand climate action.

Our group contacted the Ecosia staff and received an approval for becoming the first U of M Ecosia on Campus campaign. We are writing a student press release and contacting the University's student organizations office to continue propelling our movement.

For now, since our campaign has been made official by Ecosia, if you download the Ecosia extension through our link we can keep track of our campus' tree counter! www.ecosia.co/umich (P.S: let's beat OSU!)

Welcome to our page! This is a student-run campaign at the University of Michigan started by our concern of the rapid diminish of the number of trees and forests worldwide. One of the most notable examples is the Amazon rainforest, which according to the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics has already lost 20% of its area. That's 1 million km²–the equivalent to 4 times the state of Michigan. Not enough is being done to combat this, and we believe small acts can trigger great impacts.

In the past semester, we, Ashley Ke and Lucas Felpi, took a class called the Anthropocene, where we discussed the human impacts on the planet. Because of what we learned, we decided to take action through Ecosia. Ecosia is a search engine that donates its ad profits to plant trees and has already funded the planting of 90 million trees and counting.
