Michigan Economic Center

Michigan Economic Center The Michigan Economic Center a is a center for ideas and a network of state and local leaders and citizens.

The Michigan Economic Center is a platform and network to develop and promote state and community policy and practices central to advancing our economic future and promoting and facilitating their embrace by Michigan leaders and citizens. We are working to:

• Advance a vision for Michigan’s economic renewal
• Provide policy ideas and solutions that realize the vision
• Engage a diver

se network of citizens, leaders, and organizations

To grow and prosper, Michigan — the Great Lakes state — must reanimate our historic leadership role as an economic innovator, creator of America’s middle class, and enabler of a distinctly Michigan version of the American Dream. To do so, Michigan must once again be the globally engaged center of innovation, through our leadership in the coming “Green” and “Blue” sustainable economies based on smart energy, water, and transportation. Michigan must provide an “uncommon” education for the common man, and capitalize on our unique piece of real estate astride the Great Lakes. Add to that the rich history and culture embodied in our great cities like Detroit and Grand Rapids to make Michigan an attractive place for global citizens to live, work and develop robust businesses. We invite you to join in the work of the new Michigan Economic Center housed at the Prima Civitas Foundation, a catalyst connecting resources from throughout the state to help grow Michigan's economic base in this new, global economy.

The reason once vibrant older industrial communities across all our democracies are so challenged in making today's transition to a winning globalized, knowledge economy, is the fact that these regions and their communities were once the path-breakers and engines of national economic power. When this disappears, it leads to pain, sadness, and anger. All these emotions can change when communities & their leaders build on the communities unique industrial heritage and culture--honoring the past while taking it successfully into the future.

Learn how this community chemistry works in the new report from our Transformation Network. Lessons from Newcastle UK's Jane Robinson, Germany's Ruhr region's Jürgen Hein, Erie, Pennsylania's Ben Speggen, Chemnitz, Germany's Pascal Anselmi, Detroit, Michigan's George Moroz. All brought to you by the Eisenhower Institute at Gettysburg College & Adhara Ayndrila.

Just published with colleagues at the German Council on Foreign Relations is our latest argument for what the family of democratic & international rules & values-respecting nations must do strengthen their own economies' and the collective economies of nations with shared values-- to push back against authoritarians. We developed this argument in the context of a Munich Security Conference event we hosted hoping my own country, the United States would help lead the effort. Unfortunately JD Vance delivered a different message. Now it is up to Europe, the UK, friends in Asia and all over the world to step up and lead the fight for ! Read our new article: Revitalizing Democracy Through Green Investment | DGAP at link below

Democracies must strengthen their collective economic hand to counter authoritarian threats. Integrating inward investment and “allyshoring” – the building of economic ties with like-minded nations – can address structural challenges while preserving democratic values, especially if it offer...

Don't forget to sign up to join us next Tuesday evening, Feb 4 in Grand Rapids at the Gerald Ford Presidential Museum, as part of the Great Decisions Series. I will be speaking on how we strengthen democracy on a global basis, and effectively check the bad behavior of authoritarians like China and Russia. Brought to you by the World Affairs Council of Western Michigan & Eisenhower Institute.

To effectively counter economic competition, global security threats, and assaults on the rules-based global order from authoritarian nations, democratic allies must work together as never before and push the adoption and integration of two core strategies: building stronger domestic economies — t...

Dear Friends,

You are invited to join us for an important international discussion and Heartland Transformation Network Special Event: Thursday, October 10 at 10-11:00 am US ET; 16:00-17:00 CET for our discussion with leading US Political Journalists in the key Midwest battleground states. “Blue Wall Politics”: Inside the Key Heartland Battlegrounds Deciding the US election .

The US Presidential contest between the Harris-Walz and Trump-Vance tickets is high-stakes for the entire world. Given the political quirks of the US Electoral College voting system, only seven of the US fifty states are considered up for grabs. And within those seven the three industrial heartland states of Wisconsin, Michigan, and Pennsylvania are pivotal. Donald Trump won these three once-reliable Democratic “Blue Wall” states in 2016 by a collective total of 80,000 votes, enabling his unlikely and transatlantic alliance up-ending ascent to the White House. In 2020 Joe Biden narrowly won them back and evicted Trump from 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue.

What is going to happen in 2024? Find out by registering today!

In this 2024 'year of elections', with over 60 countries seeing voters going to the polls, democracy is doing pretty well! But where economy is diminished and life chances narrow, resentment-driven, anti-democratic movements are still finding their head. Read my reading of this years global election results tea leaves, in my new article published in The Hill. , ,

More than halfway through the year, democracy and authoritarianism appear to be playing to a draw.

I am delighted to share with you that I am joining the Eisenhower Institute at Gettysburg College (EI) as a Senior Fellow, to lead the organizations’ work on international economy-building and democracy strengthening.

Founded forty years ago by colleagues and confidants of the late President Dwight D. Eisenhower as the embodiment of his legacy of leadership and public policy, as a premier locus for research, discussion, international public policy leadership, and facilitation of top-level dialogue among international policymakers, the EI will afford a credible and prestigious platform to continue, enhance, and expand the impactful international partnerships and initiatives we have created together.

These include the transatlantic Transforming Industrial Heartlands Initiative, partnerships to promote and implement allyshoring, along with international collaborations to help democracies maintain global innovation and economic leadership .

In opening the doors of this new center for my work, we will after twelve great years, close the virtual doors on the Michigan Economic Center. I will remain a Michigan resident with my worldview, work, and feet firmly grounded in the heartland, but with a growing family of international engagements. I will continue to serve as a non-resident Senior Fellow at the Brookings Institution, and continue the strong working partnerships with so many of you, and so many of the organizations, institutions, and agents of change committed to building new economic opportunity and strengthening the health of our democracies and our alliances.

Most Sincerely,

John Austin
