Iowa Agriculture Water Alliance

Iowa Agriculture Water Alliance IAWA is a nonprofit dedicated to increasing the pace and scale of farmer-led efforts to improve water quality.

We secure funding, connect partners, and provide outreach. IAWA was founded by the Iowa Soybean, Corn Growers, and Pork Producers Associations.

🌱 Help supress hard-to-control weeds
👍 Produce 50% more oil than planting soybeans alone
🪱 Improve soil health via plant diversity
💧 Prevent erosion by keeping continuous living roots in the ground!

So why aren't Iowa farmers growing it yet? We need markets for it. The good news is that it can be used in food, biofuels, packaging, and livestock feed. That's what the Forever Green Initiative out of University of Minnesota Twin Cities is all about! We can't wait to see the future of this crop!

Our Communications Director, Rebekah Jones, went to St. Paul last week to learn about the latest in new market development for Midwest farmers. If you haven't heard about Kernza yet, it should be on your radar! It's got a ton of potential because it's good for soil, water, and it only needs to be planted once! The Forever Green Initiative is looking for ways to increase its market potential. We'll be watching!

With the Watershed Awards nominations opening up, we wanted to share some thoughts from last year's winners.

We asked each winner two questions:
Why does water quality matter to you?
and
What does this award mean to you?

Check out their responses and nominate a colleague for yourself at

Nominations are open for the 2026 Iowa Watershed Awards!

If you work with someone doing exceptional water quality work in Iowa, this is the place to nominate them.

The awards recognize three categories: Watershed Coordinator of the Year, Individual Impact Award, and Team Impact Award. The IAWA team hosts these awards alongside Iowa State University Extension, IDALS, Iowa DNR, and Conservation Districts of Iowa.

Past winners have come from watershed projects, ag organizations, nonprofits, and local government — people doing collaborative, results-driven conservation work that often goes unrecognized outside their immediate networks.

Winners receive a feature video produced by IAWA (a $5,000+ value), local media coordination, and recognition at the Iowa Water Conference.

Five to ten percent.

That's roughly how much of a field it takes in prairie strips to cut nitrogen loss by up to 90 percent in the areas where they're installed.

Prairie strips are native Iowa plants planted in strategic strips across a field, usually on contours or near waterways. They slow runoff, filter nutrients, and bring back pollinators and wildlife. And you can still farm the other 90-95 percent.

Read more at the link below, or visit the Conservation Compass to start implementing prairie strips today!
