From participant to leader.

Melissa Budowski, an alumna of Women In Transition, has completed 32 hours of Moral Reconation Therapy (MRT) training and 32 hours of MRT Domestic Violence training. She is now leading MRT classes that support women on their recovery journeys, with additional domestic violence and trauma-focused classes launching later this summer.

Women In Transition, a past recipient of the Steuben County Substance Abuse Response Fund, offers these classes free of charge to women in the community, creating opportunities for healing, growth, and support.

Stories like Melissa's demonstrate the impact of investing in evidence-based prevention, treatment, recovery, and support programs throughout Steuben County.

The Steuben County Community Foundation is now accepting applications for the Steuben County Substance Abuse Response Fund.

đź“… Applications are due June 30.

If your organization is working to address substance abuse challenges in Steuben County, we encourage you to apply.

What began as a vision years ago officially became a community celebration on May 30 as more than 1,000 people gathered for the grand opening of Sheets Family Park.

Families, community leaders, donors, partners, and supporters came together to celebrate a project years in the making. A space designed to bring people together through recreation, connection, and belonging.

The celebration featured remarks from community partners, local leaders, and members of the Sheets family, whose generosity helped make the park possible. As Mary Sheets shared during the ceremony, the word *family* is just as important as the name itself, which showed the relationships, memories, and sense of community this park was built to foster.

Sheets Family Park stands as a testament to what can happen when a community comes together around a shared vision. Thank you to everyone who helped make this project a reality.

We look forward to seeing this space filled with laughter, connection, and memories as families and individuals of all abilities come together to play and thrive.

🌟 Senior Sunday: As F.I.S.T. President, Kiersen has come full circle. This year she has grown from a student with passion into a confident voice in philanthropy.
“FIST is what helped me find my voice and my place in giving back.”
Through her leadership, she’s helped guide a group that does far more than what people see on the surface. Behind every event, grant, and initiative is thoughtful planning, problem-solving, and a deep commitment to making a difference all done by students in 8th-12th grade!
One moment that continues to stand out?
Volunteering at Cops for Kids, where a simple act, shopping alongside a child, became a powerful reminder of the impact of showing up with compassion.
“That was the moment I realized how much my role in the community truly matters.”
Under her leadership, FIST has continued to strengthen its impact across Steuben County. Not just through grants and service, but through building genuine connections across generations.
She leaves behind more than accomplishments, she leaves a mindset:
Lead with positivity
Use your voice
Make space for others to do the same
Her message to future F.I.S.T. members is simple, but powerful:
“You are here for a reason. Don’t doubt what you have to offer.”
At the Steuben County Community Foundation, we believe youth philanthropy is the pulse of the community, and leaders like her are exactly why.

Behind every grant awarded is a story of lives being changed in Steuben County.

In 2021, Cancer Services of Northeast Indiana continued supporting local families impacted by cancer, even during the challenges of the pandemic. Steuben County residents were able to safely access needed medical equipment while protecting their health, and survivors found encouragement and connection through online wellness programming like Survivor Academy Online.

That year alone, the organization served 127 Steuben County families navigating a cancer diagnosis.

Through SCCF’s Health & Human Services grant opportunities, nonprofit organizations can apply for funding that helps make services like these possible. Grants support programs and initiatives that improve quality of life, expand access to care and resources, and respond to some of the most pressing needs facing our communities.

Organizations providing health and human services in Steuben County are encouraged to apply.

Letters of Intent (LOIs) are due June 1.

It started with one person, and a community that showed up without hesitation.

When Olivia Stoy was facing cancer, people across Steuben County came together to support her and her family. What started as an outpouring of care didn’t stop there.

It grew into something lasting.

Community-driven support
Assistance for 100+ local families with a child that has a life-threatening illness
A fund that continues to help when it’s needed most

That’s the part that stands out. It didn’t end with one story. It became a way to support many more.

Because when this community shows up, it doesn’t just respond in the moment. It builds something that keeps going.

If you’ve ever witnessed this community come together for someone in need, share that story in the comments. Those moments matter more than people realize.

Sometimes the biggest impact shows up in the numbers, but what those numbers represent matters even more.

Through SCCF support, Matthew 25 Health & Care was able to:
Help 42 local patients access critical medication
Provide care to thousands across the community
Reduce preventable emergency visits

Each of those numbers is a person, a situation, a moment where something could have gone differently. Because care shouldn’t start when things reach a crisis point.

It should step in earlier, when it can still change the outcome. That’s exactly what these grants are designed to do.

Access to care impacts every community. What’s one health-related need you think deserves more attention locally?

What’s a community resource or support system that has made a difference in your life or someone you know? Share it in the comments. A lot of the biggest barriers in healthcare don’t happen inside the exam room. They happen outside of it.

Getting to appointments. Figuring out next steps. Trying to navigate everything on your own. That’s where this work at Cameron Health is making a difference.

Through SCCF support, they’re helping remove some of those everyday barriers that can stand in the way of care.

And that’s meant:
Better access to transportation
More connected care between services
Real-time support when patients need it most

It might not always be visible, but it’s the kind of change people feel.

And over time, it leads to better outcomes, stronger systems, and a healthier community.

When Lauretta Abrahamer talked about why she gave, she didn’t overcomplicate it.

“Whatever I have today, I owe to my education.” That experience stayed with her, and it shaped the way she chose to give back.

She created opportunities for students she may never meet because she understood something many donors do: communities change over time, but the need to invest in people never goes away.

That’s part of why non-restricted funds matter so much.

While scholarships, programs, and designated funds create important impact, non-restricted giving allows the Foundation to meet the needs that exist now, not just the ones we could predict years ago. It creates the flexibility to respond to new challenges, support emerging opportunities, and continue investing where it will make the greatest difference for the community.

At its core, non-restricted giving is still deeply connected to donor intent. It honors the heart behind a gift by ensuring generosity can continue creating impact as community needs evolve.

Because the most lasting philanthropy is not only about solving today’s needs.

It’s about making sure a community is prepared for tomorrow’s too.

What is something in your community you hope future generations still have access to? Share your thoughts in the comments.

30 years of FIST!

When you stop and think about it, that’s three decades of students stepping up, getting involved, and learning what it means to give back. And it’s still growing.

Pickleball for a Purpose is one of those events where you show up to have fun, but it’s also part of something bigger.

Because events like this help:
Grow the FIST endowment
Sustain student-led philanthropy
Support the next generation of community leaders

It’s not just about the game. It’s about what it makes possible.

🏓 Play. Connect. Be part of what’s next.

What’s one community event you think Steuben County should never lose? Tag someone you’d bring to the tournament or share your favorite local tradition below.
