Hey AO!
Here's a "Heads-Up" regarding an event that is going to affect our access to Highway 38.
The Redlands Bicycle Classic in years past has affected Highways 330 and 18, and the communities of Crestline, Running Springs and Big Bear. This year, the race is going to utilize the 38 on April 10.
The RBC organizers have reached out to the AOCA and are requesting that we help inform the folks of our village that we will be impacted.
In fact, all residents of Mountain Home Village, Forest Falls, Angelus Oaks, Seven Oaks, and the Camps of Barton Flats who plan to be on the highway that day will need to make alternative arrangements or prepare to wait for a pilot-car es**rt, as the upbound lane of 38 will be taken away for approximately five hours that day.
Here is a message from technical director Ed Purves regarding the impact to us; the grammar and misspellings are his:
"We anticipate racers will be up-bound SR-38 at intervals from 10:30am -12:30pm. However , CHP will take control of up-bound SR-38 at Bryant St. at 9:30am.
Up-bound traffic will be allowed, but controlled. There could be some delays depending on the time motorist decide to ascend above Bryant St. We anticipate riders should be past Angeles Oaks by aproximently 12:30pm or so.
San Bernardino County Sheriffs Dept. with the assistance of RBC Pilot vehicles will be stationed at Angeles Oaks to es**rt vehicles down bound to the Redlands area."
Finally, here is a copy of the mailer that will be sent to all affected residents:
"Dear Mountain Resident:
The 2025 Redlands Bicycle Classic is excited to announce that the return of the Trek Onyx Summit Road Race. This stage will occur on Thursday, April 10, 2025, on State Highway 38. We would like to thank all of the residents and businesses along the course for their assistance and patience, as we bring you one of the premier cycling events in the country.
The Trek Onyx Summit Road Race is a point-to-point road race. There will be two races, one Men’s race and one Women’s race, each featuring Professional racers from across North America. Each race will take place inside a rolling enclosure of Law Enforcement and official Redlands Bicycle Classic vehicles. To protect both civilian vehicles and racers, traffic will be restricted as each race passes by.
With safety as our top primary concern, there will be restrictions for traffic on Highway 38 between the hours of approximately 10:00 am to 3:00 pm. Be aware that the race “envelope” will cover both sides of the road.
Traffic will not be allowed to travel south from the Big Bear Lake area on Hwy 38 until after all races are complete at approximately 3:00 pm. Spectators will be allowed up to Onyx Summit but not past.
For traffic traveling west-bound on Hwy 38 (down) es**rt vehicles will be provided at Angeles Oaks and at the Valley of the Falls Drive/Hwy38 junction. If you are being es**rted down Hwy 38 and either race approaches from in front of you the es**rt will pull to the side of the road and stop until the race has passed by. Do not pass the es**rt vehicle, please remain behind it and stopped until the race has passed by. Once both races have passed by these locations, traffic restrictions will be removed. Should you find yourself traveling without es**rt and encounter either race, please obey the lead Law Enforcement vehicles and pull to the far right of the road and stop until the race has passed.
For traffic traveling east/north-bound (to Onyx Summit and Big Bear) traffic will be allowed to move normally until either race has passed. Traffic behind the races will not be allowed to pass so will be restricted to each races speed. The road at Onyx Summit will be restricted to one lane at the summit. Please obey traffic control personnel in this area. The area will be congested with race vehicles.
