I’m sharing this in hopes it will help someone who is unaware of anaplasma and the seriousness of it. For years we’ve known about Lyme disease from ticks, but this spring we have had 2 dogs at completely different times have symptoms of lethargy, loss of appetite, fever, even vomiting for seemingly no reason.
The first large dog we took to the vet did have ticks on him from a trip through the woods, that we had removed. But when his bloodwork came back, it was the first time we’d heard of anaplasmosis.
Just this past week our tiny little dog, who is not a likely candidate for ticks, started getting very lethargic, fever, throwing up a couple weeks prior, and was just not her perky, happy self. After blood work, I was shocked to find out she, too had it! Blood work also showed she had slight anemia, but her organ functions were normal so far. I had removed a tick from her 2 or more months ago that I knew had only been attached on her for a few minutes. I had no idea it could take up to four months for symptoms to appear. It is my understanding (please research this for yourself) that the bone marrow takes the hit first and it’s downhill from there, with many dogs dying from anaplasma!
So if your pet seems under the weather and “off”, don’t dismiss it or wait too long to have them tested, because there is a point of no return. I just wanted to share this in hopes of raising awareness of this tickborne illness. My vet said it is definitely on the rise!
