On Saturday Richard Lombard led an informative Ward Walk sharing his extensive knowledge of bird nesting at the Ward Reservation. The most exciting sighting was that barn swallows have returned to the Kimballs Barn. The disappointing news is that bobolink, once abundant in the fields have not returned the last two years. Volunteers are actively collecting data on bluebirds, tree swallows, and chickadee use of nest boxes on the property.

Ward was at it best this morning. Today’s Mother’s Day Wildflower Walk led by the fabulous Susan Hegarty was both educational and exhilarating. Yesterday’s rain encouraged a carpet of wildflowers and we learned a great deal about their botany.

Is there a better time to visit Ward?

Have you notice garlic mustard flowering in disturbed ground throughout our area? Now is the time to stop its spread as invasive vegetation. At Ward a small team led by Susan Hegarty have been hard at work bagging it throughout the Reservation. Comment if you would be willing to join our team working to manage invasive vegetation.

Few signs of spring are more quirky and fun than the American Woodcock’s magical dance.

Last Sunday, participants at the first Ward Walk of 2026, enjoyed a fabulous woodcock display by moonlight. Six deer greeted us as the sun set and as the group left we were followed by the howls of coyote.

No better way to mark the season ….

It was a tough winter all around and several of the young apple trees planted in the historic orchards didn’t make it. The voles that have dug trails in our lawns also feasted on the bark of many of the apple trees at Ward.

Volunteers guided by Adam Rollfs replanted 10 trees this week. We have been able to buy the same variety originally planted by Charles Ward. Standard size Baldwin Apples were planted today along the same lines that were originally planted over 100 years ago.

Wish the tree good luck if you are passing through the orchards. Respond to this posting if you would like to volunteer to help in the orchard.

The Passing of John Ward Kimball

John Kimball, considered the soul of the Ward Reservation, passed away peacefully at his home on January 19, 2026, at the age of 95. John was the driving force for protecting what is widely regarded as the crown jewel of outdoor spaces in Andover/North Andover - the Charles W. Ward Reservation. The view of Boston's skyline from the high meadows atop Holt Hill is an iconic feature of the area.

In 1940, Mabel Ward, John's grandmother, donated 153 acres of land to the Trustees of Reservations in memory of her late husband, Charles W. Ward. Today, thanks to the tireless stewardship of John Kimball, this publicly accessible reservation encompasses 733 acres of fields, woods, ponds, meadows, and a bog, all laced with hiking trails.

John and his wife, Margaret, lived most of their lives in Andover and raised their sons in their historic home overlooking the Ward Reservation. Thanks to this family's foresight, generosity, and dedication to land acquisition and conservation, visitors from near and far can enjoy and explore the beauty of nature throughout the reservation...from soaring kestrels in the skies, to bobolinks and bluebirds in the meadows, to blankets of trillium blossoms in the woodlands.

The Kimballs quietly helped to grow and preserve this special place in the Andovers by acquiring land and assisting with the care and maintenance of the property. They always encouraged the public to come and enjoy its treasures. The original gift of the land included a unique installation of solstice stones placed by Mabel Ward on the summit of Holt Hill. At 420 feet above sea level, it is the highest point in Essex County. In the Revolutionary War period, an account of the Battle of Bunker Hill was recorded from Holt Hill's summit. Noteworthy also on the property is the Pine Hole Bog, formed by glacial activity at the end of the last ice age. The Kimballs oversaw the installation of a boardwalk into the bog, allowing for close-up viewing of its botanical features.

To honor John's wishes that his life be remembered through his accomplishments, no memorial service is planned. Contributions in his memory can be made to support the Charles W. Ward Reservation at the Trustees of Reservations, 200 High St., 4th Floor, Boston, MA 02110. Anyone wishing to share reflections or recollections of John is encouraged to send them to [email protected], where they will be collected and shared with his family. Plans for future acknowledgements will be shared by Friends of Ward.

Our world is better thanks to Margaret Kimball who passed away on July 10 after a full 93 years. She was married to husband John Kimball for 72 years and lived at their house overlooking the meadows at Ward and with the distant view of Boston.

Margaret’s life was celebrated on Sunday with a walk on Margaret’s Trail and looping back on John’s Trail. Along the way the walkers distributed 72 sunflower seeds commemorating John and Margaret’s long marriage.

Ward Reservation’s Invasives Team is led by Susan Hegarty. Last week, Jay Glickman provided support removing glossy buckthorn from the area around Elephant Rock.

John Kimball dedicated thousands of hours to controlling the spread of invasive vegetation and the team is working with the Trustees staff to continue the work.

Why would an osprey decide to make its home in the unfortunately named Rubbish Meadow? Great Blue Heron and a Great Horned Owl also picked the same spot in previous years

This year three hatchlings are growing at Ward and their parents built a beautiful nest. They will announce your arrival.
