Andover, NH 4th of July Andover’s Fourth of July Celebration has become our community’s “Big Day,” a celebration in which everyone is invited to take part.

The present tradition of Fourth of July Celebration was started during World War II by two members of the Blackwater Grange, Etta Currier Haughton and Olive Seavey, to entertain Andover youngsters at a time when so many menfolk were away in the service. Shortly thereafter, volunteers from our community formally organized to form the Fourth of July Committee, a nonprofit community service organizat

ion whose sole purpose is to plane, oversee and pay the costs associated with the Fourth of July celebration. Over the years, more features were added to the Celebration, such as a parade, band concert, field games, pony pulling contest, street dancing, midway and fireworks, until it grew into an elaborate celebration for the whole community and great numbers of outside visitors as well. Outside commercialization has been avoided, except that local, nonprofit organizations are welcome to participate in the parade, flea market and other fundraising activities on the Andover Village Green, contributing a percentage of their profits toward continuing the event the following year.

Andover Fire Department is raffling off this 10’ Quest kayak, with a life jacket and a paddle. You can find us under the big white tent on the town green, this Friday! Tickets are $1 each or 6 for $5. The drawing will take place on Saturday, July 26 at 7 pm at our Annual Chicken BBQ.
