ABOUT FAMILY TROOPS

Starting on December, 15 2025, troops will have 3 options for the structure of their Troop. The three structures are OPTIONS that can be pursued at any time after December 15. Any option chosen needs to include the approval of the Chartering Organization of the Troop. And a new structure can be chosen later based on changes in the dynamics of your Troop(s).

THREE OPTIONS FOR YOUR TROOP:
OPTION 1
Remain a Boy troop or a Girl troop

No action needed except conversations with the Charter Org and families
OPTION 2
Your troop decides to accept any youth

With Charter Org approval, you confirm your intent to accept all youth and a switch is made in BeAScout allowing any youth to sign up in the Troop.
OPTION 3
A set of Linked Troops want to merge

There will be an "intent to merge" document (which the previous option can probably use as well)
This document will outline Charter approval, assets, bank accounts, unit number, etc. Very similar to any unit merger previously.
THINGS TO CONSIDER
This merger should not be considered either of the units taking over or absorbing the other unit.
Both Scoutmasters should be options. There can only be one SM, and there should be a lot of thought and effort into this selection.
Unit number should be discussed. If a unit would like, a totally new number could be used if it is available (this will not affect the tenure of the unit in Scouting).
The follow up surveys of the Pilot of this suggested it worked best to have a SM and lead ASM of opposite genders.
For youth positions - organize what works best for you. And, if you think it best to start with two co-SPL's so no one loses a position, please do (you will just eventually need to transition to 1).
Creating Patrols - Do what works best for you (you could do gender if you have the critical mass. If you don’t have critical mass, co-ed Patrols is an option.
For ANY activity - no Scouts should be excluded due to the lack of appropriate adult leadership. The event should be postponed or cancelled rather than excluding youth. (if you are going on a campout and youth females are attending and you don’t have an adult female to go, POSTPONE THE TRIP)
If any families do not agree and do not want to remain in the Troop, we ask that Troop leadership assist in finding another Troop for them to participate.

March is Women's History Month.

When no male leaders volunteered to lead Troop 13 of Milford, Conn., Catherine Pollard stepped up. She served as the troop’s unofficial Scoutmaster from 1973 to 1975, according to the Associated Press. Under her leadership, Troop 13 more than tripled in size and produced five Eagle Scouts.

However, her status as the top adult volunteer in Troop 13 wasn’t formalized until February 1988, when the BSA eliminated gender restrictions on all volunteer positions. Pollard, who was 69 at the time, put on her old uniform and returned to her post—this time officially. Since then, hundreds of women have served as Scoutmasters.

Today, we celebrate Catherine Pollard, Scouting America's first official female Scoutmaster.
