💙 A bluebird captured by my 12-year-old daughter, Hope.
Hope loves birds and photography, and she was thrilled to capture this beautiful female bluebird, who had just had a bath. Her love of birds is actually what helped inspire our Wings of Hope Bird Photography Contest, which we're holding to raise funds through our nonprofit, Knowing Hope Inc., to help vulnerable children access medical care in Asia.
If you have a bird photo you're especially proud of, we'd love to see it in the contest! Photographers of all experience levels are welcome.

Meet Hope. 🐦📸 and Wings of Hope

Hope is twelve years old, thriving, and, as it turns out, a budding bird photographer. This robin is one of hers.

She didn't get the eye for it from us. It comes from something all her own: patience, and a quiet attentiveness to the world around her. We've come to believe those same qualities: noticing what others overlook, and refusing to look away, are exactly what it takes to fight for a child no one else is fighting for.

That's why our first-ever bird photography contest carries her name: Wings of Hope.

Every entry fee funds medical care for vulnerable children in Asia who would otherwise go without. Care that means the difference between a family staying together and a family that can't afford to.

In memory of a little girl who taught us why this work matters.

In 2018, we met a 6-year-old girl in one of the communities we serve. Thalassemia had left her body swollen and failing. Thanks to the generosity of our sponsors, she got the transfusions and medication she needed, and with them, a childhood: school, playing with her brother, celebrating Lunar New Year with her family.

We recently learned she passed away at 14.

Her life mattered. The years she had were not guaranteed. They were made possible by people who chose to care about a child they'd never met. We are so honored to have been a small part of her story, and grateful to everyone who made it possible.

At 14, he's the size of a child half his age. The years without access to proper care for his thalassemia left its mark on his small body. When we first connected with this family, they were nearly invisible, isolated in one of the most remote corners of Asia we serve.
Today, everything feels different.
His mother told us she finally believes she can do this, that she can care for her son, that there's a path forward. That belief is everything. It's the first step toward the medical care, nutrition, and support he needs to thrive and grow.
Hope isn't abstract. It looks like a mother who stopped feeling alone. Together we are making a difference, one life at a time.

Transfusion day for these precious twin girls living in rural Asia. We support several families who have twin children with transfusion dependent thalassemia. Many families share the heartbreak of feeling unable to provide the medical care their children need. We are grateful to walk alongside these families, helping to ease the burden and bring hope through lifesaving transfusions.

Tongtong, the sweet girl with both transfusion dependent thalassemia and acute myeloid leukemia received a stem cell transplant using cells donated by her father. The chemotherapy was rough for her, but she is now well enough to be discharged and stay near the hospital for medical management. Thank you for the hopes, prayers, and support for Tongtong!

This is sweet Tongtong, who has transfusion dependent thalassemia. Tongtong's family live in a rural village, and have worked hard to be able to manage her medical care without outside support. Sadly, Tongtong has been recently diagnosed with acute myeloid leukemia, a truly heartbreaking situation, which, on top of her thalassemia, seems way beyond her family's means. We would like to provide a grant to her family to help with the huge financial burden of both thalassemia and leukemia. We hope they will somehow understand that they are not alone in this battle. Thank you for helping to chose hope for Tongtong.

As we close out 2025, LiMin says thank you for helping us make a difference, one life at a time!
We first met LiMin in 2017. Like many children with thalassemia in our area of work, her future was uncertain without consistent access to blood transfusions. Her single mom worked hard at a toy factory, but could not afford regular treatment on her monthly salary of $150/month. Through the faithfulness of our supporters, LiMin has been able to receive the transfusions and medication she needs. Her mom no longer feels alone while managing this chronic disease. What once felt impossible has become a steady source of strength and hope—for LiMin and for her mom.
Together we are changing the world for the better.

This year, Knowing Hope is raising funds in memory of Jie Jie—a bright, courageous 10-year-old girl who lost her battle with thalassemia. Her story fuels our mission to ensure that no child is ever denied medical care because of cost.
