Friendly honey bees are swarming in Geneseo! One of our supporters passed along this photo of a swarm he spotted while sitting on his porch yesterday!

The "swarm" refers to when bees separate from their previous hive location and fly en-masse to a tree or other temporary location where they form up and cluster together like in this photo...then, scouts will venture out to find a suitable location to establish a new hive. Once a suitable place has been found, the group of bees will again 'swarm' through the air and head to that location.

They are not a threat to you during this process, with no eggs/honey to protect, they are happy to just be doing their own thing. Although it is loud and impressive to see thousands of bees in flight - and it can be unerving - just stay still and enjoy your good fortune to see such a sight!

If bees swarm in a location that is problematic, call a local bee-keeper to come and remove them so they can be given a safe home - otherwise they'll be on their way in a few hours (or days sometimes) to a new place.

With the sunny and warm days ahead, there will likely be many hives swarming this week, so keep an eye out for friendly honey bees!
