This week, members of the Kindred Hearts team attended the Institute on Violence, Abuse & Trauma (IVAT) Conference, joining professionals from across disciplines to learn, connect, and deepen our understanding of trauma and its impact on children, adults, and families.

For us, professional development is about more than attending a conference, it’s about bringing what we learn back into the room with our clients. We’re returning with new research, clinical tools, and perspectives that will continue to strengthen our trauma-informed work, including approaches to complex trauma, family violence, child and adolescent behavioral health, problematic sexual behaviors, and supporting families impacted by abuse and adversity.

We’re especially excited about opportunities to further expand specialized clinical training within our counseling program and continue building services that meet gaps we see in our own community.

The learning doesn’t stop when the conference ends. We bring it home, share it with our teams, and use it to keep growing the quality of care we provide to the children and families we serve. Grateful for the opportunity to learn, grow, and bring new knowledge back home. 💛

💙As back to school has happened and the changing of seasons is underway, we kindly ask that everyone keeps in mind that there are people in our community and or within close proximity to people in our community that are medically fragile.

This week, Kindred Hearts attended the Substance Use Disorder Integrated Care Conference in Long Beach as part of our continued commitment to prevention and early intervention. 💚

This work is especially important for youth in foster, kinship, guardianship, and adoptive families. Many of our youth have experienced trauma, loss, disrupted attachment, and other early adversity, experiences that increase their risk for mental health and substance use challenges later.

We see that risk right here in Shasta County. Local data shows that 36% of 9th graders and 49% of 11th graders have used alcohol or another drug in their lifetime, with even higher rates among youth in non-traditional schools.

For us, prevention means getting upstream: supporting kids and families early, strengthening relationships, building connection and belonging, and making sure caregivers have support before challenges become crises. It also means building strong partnerships with agencies across our community, so when youth or families do need treatment or recovery support, we can help connect them to the right resources and ensure they aren’t navigating those systems alone.

Permanency is only the beginning. Strong families, connected youth, and supported caregivers are all part of prevention.

We’re excited to bring what we learned back home and continue building stronger supports for Shasta County families. 💚
