We got cultures back and were have the right meds for the infection

The mass is shrinking and we see Dr Scott again Wednesday where she will hopefully be able to clean the rest out under light sedatives and this absolutely gorgeous freak can go HOME

Hamper has a family waiting on him and his neuter site got infected so we are all experiencing the 😫😫😫 of that together.

Hamps wants out of the laundry room
His family wants him home
I wanna sleep (lil freak stomps all night cause he's been stuck in a laundry room too long)

Hang on, everyone 🥱we almost got this

You know what's crazy? I (like many other rescue operators) have had countless people accuse me of using sick or injured rabbits to "make" money 🫠🤣

Wanna know why that's crazy?

Because we don't just *not make money*
We lose it. We spend so much money out of our own personal accounts, if anyone looked at our books as a business, it would be valued well below zero. Im a hairdresser yall.. not independently wealthy😆

There isnt ANY monetary value here.
Our assets are literally just the rabbits
We dont get expenses covered fully. We use credit. And every month we hope enough comes in to pay down a portion.

Of course, there are "rescues" out there scamming people, and you should always be wary of that. But these people aren't talking about scams

Breeders usually are the worst for this, since they cannot fathom ever doing anything for an animal that doesnt gain them profit

Anyway. I wanted to rant because I cry in my car over the debt we are in and the thought of having to euthanize animals solely because I cant afford their medical care and there's people out here claiming I keep rabbits Darla and Charles here alive just to make money 😵‍💫

Oh and if I was trying to get donations why would I literally be posting the vets to pay directly? Wild. Anyway here those are lol we owe Berkley a crap ton of money.

Because he wouldn't be a Hay Monster if he didn't have issues... Hamps has an infection

He was all ready to go. De-wormed, syphilis free, URI cleared, and neutered. He had a family come meet him and they fell in love. He was almost adopted. Almost🫠

Saturday I gave him a real good once over, and noticed an area near one of his incisions that looked off. I let his family know he needed one more recheck so we could be sure. I booked it for Monday but by Sunday it was clear this was an infection. By Monday it had grown even more, so we booked surgical intervention for Wednesday.

Wednesday came, I dropped him off in the morning, and while Dr Scott was investigating under anesthesia to see how to remove it whole, our dude turned purple. Luckily she's a fantastic vet and they were able to get him stable and clean up the area and finish investigating.

Basically without all the fancy medical terms, Hamper has a nasty infection and we have to do VERY aggressive antibiotics because we dont want to keep risking anesthesia, which is needed to fully excise the abscess

We did have cultures sent out to make sure we are on the right meds. His new family and I are all really hopeful that he will still be able to go home at some point. (We discussed end of life fostering and medical care briefly but they're not bunny experienced enough for this magnitude of situation quite yet)

If I can get the infection to shrink down enough Dr Scott will make one more attempt with a different anesthesia protocol to get him infection free. Everyone, please send Hamper get well soon vibes!

Hank has been having some issues hopping lately, so we took him in for bloodwork and xrays.

His xrays showed arthritis in his hips and spine

Hank gets his molars ground and tear ducts flushed every 9 weeks as it is. Now he will be even more special needs, but his sanctuary fosters are amazing and will do whatever he needs

His labs looked okay but showing a lot of inflammation and muscle loss so hes starting on meds to stay comfortable

Hank's tab was $579 but his fosters generously covered $200 for us🖤🖤

Chris would like to let you know that he is NOT A PINECONE 🌲🐇. He does belong to the Pinaceae family, he belongs to the Lagomorph family (that’s the rabbit species name).
This is a good time to remind everyone the importance of grooming/brushing your bunny friends 🪮. We are headed into fall which means shedding shedding shedding!
When you brush your rabbit it not only makes them look amazing, it helps decrease the chance of digestion problems. We all know bunnies are notorious for having those, so let’s do our part to make sure they’re not getting hairballs stuck in there.
Yes they hate it. But we know better cuz we are their parents and parents sometimes know best.

Alsoooo, I hear HayMonsters will be hosting a grooming event pretty soon incase you don’t want to be the bad guy!

"Euthanized on intake"

Yesterday was only the 3rd time in the 6 years we have had to do this. We take the worst of the worst medical cases. It has to be horrific to that make that devastating list.

The only times we have ever been forced to do this it's been rabbits who were loose outside, and their injuries were too catastrophic to overcome. All the three times the entire situation was avoidable. The very first one was quite similar to Caterpillars injuries. Something had caught the bunny leading to large/deep open wounds in his abdomen. Open wounds on an animal bring flies. I'll leave that at that. The second was hit by a vehicle, somehow survived long enough on the side of the road for us to try. The third, was sweet Caterpillar.

Its hard to know exactly what happened, but she was found in a driveway. Her hip/pelvis and femur was shattered. The bones exited the skin leaving those wounds that flies flock to. Within a half hour of getting into Meghan's hands, she was at the vet. We were all too late to help her, though, and euthanasia was our only option.

I'm sorry to have given everyone that same hope I had yesterday. We had no idea how severe her injuries were. Any amount donated towards Caterpillars care that exceeds the costs will go directly to the vet care of the other Monsters.

I really wanted her to be okay and join Jill's fluffle. And as much as Jill and Meghan and I all talk about how we have no space and no money, we all really really wanted this sweet baby angel to make it.

I am so sorry that humans failed you this hard, sweet girl.
