Burner Bob

Burner Bob Burner Bob® is a Bobwhite Quail that promotes the careful use of prescribed fire. The forests need fire to survive and thrive.

Burner Bob® is a Bobwhite Quail mascot who lives in the longleaf forest with other animal friends such as gopher tortoises, indigo snakes, and Red-cockaded Woodpeckers. He devotes his life to explaining to people that the longleaf forest with its many plants and animals has evolved over time to being burned on a regular basis. The careful use of prescribed fire creates good habitat for sensitive species and reduces risk from wildfires.

While attending the inaugural East Texas Fire and Nature Festival this past Saturday, met a new like minded Friend,
Blaze the Bison. We enjoyed the day.

Amidst the hurricane debris, a beautiful creature appears.

A rare sight to see a Gray Fox during the day, a mother looking for food to provide nourishment to her kits. A beautiful creature.
Thank you for correcting my misidentification, as a Red Fox!

Traditionally, we burn on a two or three rotation with a lot of growing season fire. It is a joy to burn old Longleaf and wiregrass. The results are heavenly. This season is a challenge, burning heavy hurricane debris. Flaming pine tops next to surviving trees is added stress. We are just trying to reduce wildfire hazard.

This is what it looks like burning with hurricane debris everywhere. Consider this was an evening burn, 46 degrees and 44 % RH. We are trying to reduce fuel load now.

After the breaks were secured with additional black from a backing fire, a head fire was used to sweep across two year old planted Longleaf. The multi purpose objectives were wildfire potential reduction, elimination of volunteer Slash Pine and hardwoods, wildlife habitat improvement, and safe buffer to burn the heavy hurricane debris area.

A couple of Good control burns this week, today we ran a fire through some two year old planted Longleaf, still in grass stage. Friday we backed a fire through older planted Longleaf with hurricane debris to reduce wildfire hazard.

Happy to report that the Great Grandfather of our Longleaf Forest survived the hurricane devastation intact. Last Summer a Dendrochronologist took a bore sample. Without reaching the center, 239 annual rings were counted. When years are added for the grass stage and reaching chest height bore level, this tree is well on its way to being an old tree. The foreground is a Longleaf seedling in the grass stage.

This is a short clip, by a good friend, TJ, who assisted with the burn. His eagle eyes spotted three adult Indigo Snakes, that had emerged from a gopher burrow to radiate. They were not in the mood to make new friends.
