Meet Christa Wilson, Alaska EXCEL’s Program Director and one of the driving forces behind the student experience for many years.
As Program Director, Christa coordinates Alaska EXCEL’s sessions, helps develop the annual program calendar, implements new opportunities for students, and supports staff development. Her leadership helps ensure every program is meaningful, engaging, and designed to prepare students for success.
Christa's journey with Alaska EXCEL began when she was in high school, volunteering with the early EXCEL program that later evolved into Alaska EXCEL. Through service-learning projects—including volunteering at the Alaska Food Bank, visiting the Pioneer Home, and making Christmas ornaments with students—she discovered her passion for working with youth from rural Alaska. That passion has shaped her career ever since.
One of Christa’s favorite parts of her work is witnessing those "aha!" moments, when students discover new skills, gain confidence, and realize what they are capable of achieving. While there have been countless memorable moments throughout her career, what makes her most proud is reconnecting with former students who are thriving in their careers and communities. Hearing how Alaska EXCEL played a meaningful role in their journey is a powerful reminder of the lasting impact of the program.
Her advice to students:
"Don't quit. Quitting becomes a habit, and once you quit on something, it becomes easier to quit the next time."
One life skill Christa believes every young person should learn is how to budget and manage their finances—an essential tool for building independence and achieving long-term goals.
Over the years, Christa has watched students grow in many ways, but what stands out most is their development as leaders. Through Alaska EXCEL, students build confidence, strengthen their voices, and discover their ability to lead both in their communities and beyond.
