Today, 25 years after the Sept. 11 attacks on the World Trade Center and Pentagon and hijacking of Flight 93, ENA remembers those lost and the emergency nurses and other first responders who rescued, treated and consoled.

In New York, Virginia and Washington, D.C., emergency department teams activated their disaster plans – adapting space for triage, burn units and decontamination areas – while working through communication system disruptions. As the influx of patients slowed in the hospitals, many nurses headed at Ground Zero, volunteering on site to care for rescue workers who spent days searching for victims. Still others from many miles away stepped away from their families and jobs to travel to New York and volunteer where the needs were greatest.

ENA remains grateful to all who worked through those darkest days with clinical expertise and compassion, caring for the injured despite their fear, uncertainty and their own grief.
