Global Exploration and Recovery Inc

Global Exploration and Recovery Inc GEaR is an international team of scientists and wilderness professionals dedicated to finding and returning missing American servicemembers.

The story of GEaR starts with a seemingly impossible mission in the arctic. John Bradley, Francis Marley, Nick Bratton and Jaana Gustafsson all met as members of the Duck Hunt in 2012, an expedition in eastern Greenland whose aim was to find the wreckage of a U.S. Coast Guard plane that crashed in 1942 and was buried deep within a glacier. The likelihood of finding a missing plane whose location w

as unknown in the vast expanses of ice was infinitesimal. Yet the search made meaningful progress, as we found evidence of the wreckage suggesting we were in the right area. The mission continued in 2013 and our friendships grew. There is something about the shared experience of working hard together in adverse conditions that builds strong bonds. We endured 70-mile per hour winds, freezing temperatures, snowstorms, and weeks of freeze-dried food together. We kept each other laughing through the challenges and triumphs. While a range of factors combined to thwart our efforts that year we understood that we had what it would take to find the plane and help return the bodies of the missing men to their families. GEaR is the next chapter in the saga of search and recovery that began in 1942. Our philosophy is that missions of this complexity are most effectively achieved through a combination of technical mastery, close collaboration with public and private partners, and thorough planning. With proven techniques, the right tools for the job, and an approach adapted from years of experience, we hope to bring the story of the Duck to a conclusion by finding the men aboard and bring them home along with other missing Service members and individuals from around the globe.

Happy New Year to our Global Exploration & Recovery community, and yes, we have officially cleared the first hump day.

Sixteen years ago, our team came together to conduct wild Arctic searches. Since then, we have tackled more than a few humps, along with mountains and ice caps, learning that in the Arctic every step counts and every decision echoes. How you move matters. How you share it matters even more.

At the end of last summer, nearly 2,000 pounds of gear arrived, fashionably late on one of the season’s final ships. We are still grateful for its arrival, as it is bound for one of the most remote locations on Earth and sets the stage for our greatest effort yet in recognition of our country’s upcoming 250th anniversary.

We are now six months out from our next expedition. We would love for you to follow along, support, and be part of something truly meaningful in 2026. More details soon. Stay tuned.

As the year takes its final bow, we’re excited to welcome WeeGee Smith of Vermont to the GE&R team. This summer, I caught up with WeeGee in his hometown to swap stories and talk through everything we’ve been quietly building behind the scenes. We’re thrilled to finally share the news and we’ll be shining a spotlight on our good friend and teammate, WeeGee, very soon. From everyone at GE&R, wherever you’re ringing in the night, we wish you a wonderful and safe evening.

Warmest holiday wishes to our friends and followers from the GE&R team! ❄️🌲🏔️

Why did the turkey start a podcast?
To finally give everyone a piece of its mind before they took a piece of everything else. 😆

Amid the milk-white mist I stray,
but stillness waits, and patience stays.
The light shall pierce, the veil shall part,
and beauty bloom in secret art.
