πŸ“£ ACTION ALERT: We have until June 10th to tell British Columbia what Alaskans think about the plans to operate another risky gold mine in the Taku watershed.

Canagold's proposed New Polaris Gold Mine includes
- a barging plan that is a proven failure
- a nearby B.C. mine that has been polluting the Taku for over half a century
- NO way for Alaskans to have a real voice
- testing a 98-foot landing craft/barge on the Taku in June 2026, even though previous mining companies' barging attempts largely failed
- a proposed 225 barge roundtrips from Juneau during mine construction, which exposes the lower river, spawning and rearing salmon, and all river users to potential groundings, spills, increased erosion, and other negative impacts
- AND a one-mile-long airstrip in Flannigan Sloughβ€”the largest wetland in all of the Taku watershed and a biodiverse, critically important salmon rearing area. The area regularly floods.

Congratulations to Marie Johanson, who won a Fishpond Wind River roll top backpack in echo shale color in our first drawing of the year! Keep an eye out for more opportunities to win great gear like this waterproof 38 L backpack throughout the summer.

Alaska is the Salmon State β€” the last, best place for wild salmon and the ways of life they make possible. Thanks to fishpond for supporting wild salmon 🐟

The North Pacific Fishery Management Council's June meeting is underway β€” and they have a chance to close an enormous loophole that allows trawlers to drag the bottom in waters closed to bottom contact.

To combat plummeting salmon returns, three tribal organizations from the Arctic-Yukon-Kuskokwim regions have formed a new Tribal consortium, the Arctic Yukon Kuskokwim Tribal Consortium (AYKTC), and are raising a unified voice to protect ways of life dependent on healthy salmon runs in the Yukon and Kuskokwim rivers.

The Association of Village Council Presidents (AVCP), Yukon River Inter-Tribal Fish Commission (YRITFC), and Kuskokwim River Inter-Tribal Fish Commission (KRITFC) have formed AYKTC and are working together to elevate tribal leadership, strengthen fisheries management and ensure Indigenous knowledge informs decision-making in Alaska.

πŸ“’ Alaska's original permanent fund is one all of us benefit from β€” but a few are trying to draw down. Check out this great opinion piece from Southeast Alaska commercial fisherman, former logger and city council member Michael Kampnich.

The North Pacific Fishery Management Council (NPFMC) will be meeting in Vancouver, WA, thousands of miles outside of Alaska's federal fisheries, June 1st- 9th. An important topic to discuss is the standards for pelagic, or "midwater," trawls. For years, Alaskans have voiced concerns that these pelagic trawls should not be operating as mobile bottom gear, and it's past time for the NPFMC to take action to keep midwater draggers off the bottom.

Past logging practices degraded fish habitat in Cube Cove β€” and left old infrastructure to fall apart and block fish passage. Now a small but mighty crew is fixing that πŸ’ͺ
