Qualifications for the position: must be 18+ years, live in rural Alaska, have a high school degree or GED, and are interested in working with youth.

Rural Youth Art Classes – Seeking Indigenous Artist

The Resilient Alaska Youth (RAY) AmeriCorps program is looking for an Indigenous Alaskan artist interested in running workshops in rural communities across Alaska as part of our Cultural Exchange Workshop Series. Applications are due 2/11!

Who We Are: RurAL CAP’s RAY AmeriCorps program supports afterschool programming in rural Alaskan communities with an emphasis on projects that connect youth to their culture.

Workshop Details: In spring 2022 we are looking for an Indigenous Alaskan artist who is willing to share their art form with youth across Alaska. The artist would travel to 5 or more communities and teach a group of youth in the community about their art form as well as guide the youth to produce their own creation. This could be drum making, beading, storytelling, carving, music making or any medium of interest. We would also like the artist to guide youth to make connections to their local culture and why art is important.

When: Workshops will take place March-April. The artist will work with the local Youth Activities Coordinator in each community to plan a date/time and details of the event. The artist will travel to the community with materials and stay for at least one night. At each site artist will be responsible for teaching youth how to create one form of art, as well as talk about the significance of his/her art form. We also ask the artist to host one community-wide event in the evening.

Funding: Funds are available to sponsor the artist for travel, wages and materials for the workshops
