Bird Treatment & Learning Center

Bird Treatment & Learning Center We care and advocate for Alaska's wild birds through rehabilitation, education and outreach.
(1)

Bird TLC has been caring for Alaska’s wild birds since 1988 when Dr. James R. Scott, DVM, began treating sick and injured birds at his veterinary clinic. Since then, we have grown to become Alaska’s busiest rehabilitation clinic, taking in approximately 600 birds a year from across the state. In addition to rehabilitating wild birds, we offer interactive, science-based education programs to schools, community organizations, and tour groups.

Wrapping up a busy week!

Our Education team was busy, busy, busy!

🦅Ambassador Culuk, along with volunteers Lisa and Terri, led our first public Ambassador Bird Program of the summer. We loved all the great questions the highly engaged audience had about Bald Eagles!

🦅Two groups of tourists thoroughly enjoyed meeting multiple Ambassadors, including Shavila, Breland, and Ghost.

🦅Cook Inlet Tribal Council’s summer camp kids were treated to indigenous stories narrated by our volunteer Lisa and a special appearance by Ambassador Breland.

🦅Our largest Avian Teen Crew yet—18 youth in grades 7–12—started their summer service on Monday! We think this is one of our most important and impactful programs. Find out why in our latest blog post: https://bit.ly/4fr9Icd

🦅Plus, we chatted with visitors at the Alaska Public Lands Information Center and celebrated Potter Marsh Discovery Day.

Meanwhile, in rehabilitation... 🩺 We’re currently caring for 11 orphaned ducklings, a nestling magpie who (as the story goes) was dropped by a raven, a fledgling raven, a fledgling nuthatch, and a Yellow-rumped Warbler who collided with a window.

Today is World Environment Day! This year, focuses on climate change and asks each of us: “What can I do?”

While it’s easy to become overwhelmed, here are a few simple things you can do in your own backyard to make a difference:

🌍 Reduce your lawn: Allow a portion of your yard to “re-wild” itself. Even a small thicket of alder, elderberry, and native herbaceous plants provides crucial habitat and food for birds and other wildlife. You can also expand your cultivated garden space—just be sure to include native plants for insects, pollinators, and birds.

🐝 Tip: Check out this ecoregion guide from The Pollinator Partnership to identify plants native to your area: https://www.pollinator.org/guides

🐝 Resource: Homegrown National Park® Official Group offers fantastic resources to help you build biodiversity right at home: https://homegrownnationalpark.org/

🌍 Skip the pesticides and herbicides: Did you know that 90% of bird species rely on insects for food during key parts of their life cycles? Using herbicides destroys vital habitats for both insects and birds. Furthermore, herbicide drift can travel up to a mile from the application area, damaging the native, seed-producing plants that wildlife depends on.

🌍 Remove invasive species: Invasive plants quickly outcompete the native flora that local birds, insects, and animals need to survive.

What will you do ?

Ambassador Culuk welcomes the 2026 Avian Teen Crew!

This is our largest group of avian-loving teens yet, with many of them returning for their second, third, and even fourth years! We're inspired by these young adults who dedicate their summers to being part of our education team. At public programs, they help us teach others about Alaska's wild birds and the importance of protecting them and their habitats. They also assist with the daily tasks of ambassador bird care, including cleaning enclosures, preparing diets, and making enrichment items. These teens are truly the next generation of conservationists. Please help us, and Ambassador Culuk, welcome them!
