“Alaska is facing a persistent and well-documented labor shortage. The Ukrainian refugees currently residing in Alaska represent an immediate and practical solution. From a purely economic standpoint, retaining this workforce benefits Alaska businesses that are already employing these individuals, supports timely completion of major infrastructure projects, and reduces reliance on costly out-of-state labor. More broadly, it reinforces America’s tradition of rewarding lawful work, self-sufficiency, and contribution to the national interest.”

Thank you, Governor Mike Dunleavy, for advocating on behalf of Alaska’s Ukrainian refugee community. ACLT is a proud partner and supporter of New Chance - United Relief Program and Catholic Social Services - Alaska to retain and invest in our refugee community, and we couldn’t agree more.

More than 100 Ukrainian refugees have left Alaska since President Trump paused a humanitarian parole program.

We are saddened to learn of the passing of our long-time Set Up Shop client and friend, Gene Grey. Gene was the owner and operator of Tatilani Restaurant (now Natia Cafe), which served a mouth-watering menu of Samoan and Japanese favorites, and quickly became an anchor business in the Spenard neighborhood and for the Samoan community in Anchorage.

Gene’s business journey began with running Asumaia, Anchorage’s lead shop for Polynesian fabrics and printed clothing, and with Gene’s delicious and popular Keke Saiga (Samoan cookies)! At the same time, Gene had been working in the restaurant industry for 4 years along with his sister, who was trained as a sushi chef. Gene dreamed of opening a sit-down restaurant with his family to sell Polynesian and Japanese hot food and baked goods. The pandemic closed some doors, but it also opened others, and Gene found an available restaurant space in Spenard and decided to begin to build his dream. After graduating from Set Up Shop in 2020, Gene took a leap and signed a lease, refinished the interior with help from friends and family, and worked to prepare his launch. Tatilani Restaurant opened its doors in July 2020, still featuring Gene’s signature Asumaia clothing shop inside. Tatilani opened with huge success, becoming a gathering place for birthday parties, church events, and so much more. Gene quickly grew his business to offer event catering across the city and a coffee bar inside. When his catering business began to outpace his restaurant, Gene did what every business owner must do at some point: reevaluate his business model. Gene decided to focus his business on catering to meet his demand and opened a catering-only location in East Anchorage.

It was ACLT's honor to present Gene with our Neighborhood Business of the Year Award in 2022, pictured in these photos. This award recognized Gene’s courage and drive to open a brick-and-mortar business in a target neighborhood during the pandemic, and to do so with flying colors.

As is always the case, Gene’s impact reached far beyond his business. Gene was a bright light across our city and a leader in Anchorage's Samoan community. He was a role model for his employees, who exemplified humility and hard work. His warmth and compassion were effusive. Gene was a frequent guest speaker in our Set Up Shop training classes, and he became a natural mentor to other Set Up Shop alumni who were just starting their business journeys. We miss him already, and are sending our heartfelt condolences to Gene’s family and staff members during this difficult time.

Happy Elizabeth Peratrovich Day! Elizabeth Peratrovich (Ḵaax̱gal.aat) was a member of the Tlingit Lukaax̱.ádi clan of Southeast Alaska, whose leadership and advocacy changed our State forever.

Among many other accomplishments, Elizabeth served as Grand President of the Alaska Native Sisterhood. At the time, Alaska Native peoples faced rampant and blatant discrimination that often denied basic human rights. Through her powerful and tireless advocacy, Elizabeth led Governor Gruening to sign America's first anti-discrimination law on February 16, 1945, outlawing discrimination against Alaska Native peoples and ending Jim Crow practices in Alaska. This law led not just our state but our country in civil rights protections, passed 14 years before Alaska became a state and nearly 20 years before the national Civil Rights Act.

Today, the best way we can honor her is by continuing to build a State and country that ensures justice and equality for all.

“What we need to be doing is fighting population loss and economic stagnation. And we know that immigrant participation in our workforce and in our small business ownership and entrepreneurship sector is hugely important.”

Hear from our CEO and six other leaders on the state of immigration in Alaska, and why keeping our immigrant and refugee neighbors in our State is so important. Thank you to Rep. Andrew Gray for collecting and sharing these messages!

Attorneys, advocates and employers warn that fear, labor shortages and enforcement quotas are breaking lives and hurting the state.

Last week, our CEO Kirk Rose sat down with Rep. Andrew Gray on his East Anchorage Book Club podcast to discuss the crucial role of immigrants in our Anchorage economy.

We know that outmigration is an 11-year trend in Anchorage, with a shallow labor pool frequently cited as a large challenge for many industries. We also know that the immigrant community in Alaska participates in the labor pool and starts businesses at a higher rate than US-born residents. Hear more on these and many other reasons immigration is not a problem for Alaska's economy, but an opportunity and a solution. Thank you, Representative Gray, for the opportunity!
