Our Tribal Fish and Wildlife Department team was busy setting up and executing the first annual Tribal Youth Training Program (TYTP) Camp at the Kasitsna Bay Lab. 🔬🐟

Maddy and Hanna were busy doing stream surveys while still participating in the TYTP camp. Dustin was busy keeping track of it all as well as keeping things on track for our first TYTP camp and its many moving parts. Rick had to deal with weather getting into the TYTP Camp but overall, we had pretty good weather for the camp and all of our activities. 🔆🎉

The team really pulled together, had fun, and made for a successful camp. ✨

Kings Bay (PWS) Moose Study Expands
For generations, residents of Chenega and Tatitlek have hunted moose in Kings Bay in western Prince William Sound. However, the moose hunt in the area has been closed for many years due to limited information about the local moose population and its abundance.

For the past two years, Chugach Regional Resource Commission (CRRC) biologists have partnered with residents of Chenega to collect important information about the local moose population and better understand its population dynamics and use of the area.

This August, CRRC’s Tribal Wildlife Biologist expanded the study by deploying remote trail cameras near the head of Kings Bay. The cameras will help researchers better understand when and how local moose are using the area, providing valuable information about their seasonal movements and habitat use.

The information collected through this ongoing community-based research will be presented to the Federal Subsistence Board as part of an effort to provide the information needed to consider reopening the Kings Bay moose hunt for residents of Chenega and Tatitlek.

This collaborative effort combines local knowledge with wildlife research to help communities better understand and manage an important traditional resource.

The Tribal Fish and Wildlife Department is currently hosting a Tribal Youth Training Camp focused on applied science. 🔬

The participants learned how to collect habitat data, minnow trap and electro-fish juvenile fish, and identify juvenile fish while at the Fish Creek Dam site in Seldovia. They also learned how our surveys can protect our lands with tools like the Anadromous Waters Catalog. 🐟

We found coho salmon and dolly varden in the stream which was a new nomination to the Anadromous Waters Catalog and provides greater justification to remove the dam, a project NOAA and the Seldovia Village Tribe have been pursuing.

🍂🦌 Fall is in the air, and hunting season is just around the corner! Hunters are getting ready to head into the field in pursuit of bear, moose, goats, ducks, and grouse. 🐻🫎🦆

Before you head out, make sure you know the latest regulations! The Chugach Regional Resource Commission has updated its hunter regulation posters for each species and hunting unit, highlighting the regulation changes made over the past winter.

They’re an easy, quick way to brush up on the details and make sure you’re prepared for the season. 🎯

🌱 Rooted in Reciprocity: Growing Food Sovereignty Across Alaska

What happens when communities come together to share knowledge, grow food, and learn from one another? 🌱

The Alaska Resilience Farms (ARF) collaborative is building a statewide network focused on strengthening local food systems, supporting sustainable agriculture, and advancing food sovereignty through relationship, knowledge sharing, and reciprocity.

CRRC is proud to be part of this growing network. From hydroponics and community gardens to hands-on Knowledge Exchanges, these partnerships create opportunities to learn from one another and share what works in communities across Alaska.

We’re excited to see how these relationships continue to grow—and how, together, we can help strengthen food systems and community resilience for generations to come. 💚
