The Survivors You Don’t See
Male Survivor Invisibility in Alaska

What if one of the biggest barriers facing male survivors isn’t that they’re unwilling to speak…

What if it’s that they rarely see themselves included in the conversation?

For years, I didn’t think of myself as a victim. I thought I was the only one.

In this video, I explore how shame, silence, and invisibility shape the lives of many male survivors, and why creating space for men to speak also sends a powerful message to boys who may be struggling today:

You’re not alone.

I’d love to hear your thoughts in the comments.

Truth Vs Trauma

It is a common belief that people think justice helps survivors heal.

But many survivors say the legal process itself can become another trauma.

Trauma doesn’t always look how people expect. People freeze. Forget timelines. Shut down emotionally.

So here’s the question for you:

Can courts still pursue truth without recreating the fear and powerlessness survivors already lived through?

There’s a part of childhood abuse many survivors struggle to talk about openly.

The guilt.
The confusion.
The self-blame.

Wondering:
“Why didn’t I stop it?”
“Why didn’t I tell?”
“Did I somehow participate?”

What many survivors don’t realize is that grooming, fear, attachment, shame, and survival responses can deeply shape how a child reacts to abuse.

This video is for survivors still carrying those questions in silence.

You are not alone.
And survival is not consent.

Feeling pretty frustrated tonight. HB 101, the bill to raise Alaska’s age of consent to 18, had strong bipartisan support and proved it could stand on its own merit.

Many of us were concerned when it was rolled into the larger omnibus crime bill, HB 239, because it felt like that move put HB 101 at greater risk. Unfortunately, it now appears Governor Mike Dunleavy may veto HB 239 altogether.

That said, the strong bipartisan support for these protections means the legislature can override a veto! We are all watching closely to see what happens next.

Shoutout to thank Rep. Andrew Gray and his office for keeping us informed through this process!

The package includes raising the age of consent from 16 to 18 and stricter sentences for fatal hit-and-run offenders.

One last push!Thank you, Star Alaska, for this call to action!

Survivors: If people truly understood, domestic violence, what would change?
Your lived experience could help someone recognize the science sooner.

Children often show us something is wrong long before they can explain it. Safe conversations, trusted adults, and listening without judgment can change a child’s life.

Silence protects abuse. Conversation protects children.

Many adult mental health struggles begin long before adulthood.

Childhood trauma, abuse, neglect, and fear can shape a person for decades when kids do not receive support early on. Prevention and early intervention are not separate from mental health conversations. They are part of the solution.

If we want healthier communities tomorrow, we have to protect children today.
