The Econ Club is hosting a monthly film series with thought provoking documentaries that demonstrate principles of economics. Our first showing is January 24 @ 6 - 8 pm in RH 101. The film Rotten: The Avocado Wars is a 1 hour documentary about the rise of the avocado in the American diet and all of the challenges that come with its growth. We will look for concepts within the film for discussion after viewing such as: supply and demand, trade policy, and externalities. Will you still want to eat avocados?

Come for the popcorn, stay for the conversation 😎

A special presentation by Dr. Brett Watson, a postdoctoral researcher at ISER, about ballot measure one. Dr. Watson specializes in applying modern econometric approaches to questions surrounding resource policy, community engagement with resources, and extractive firm behavior. He is currently working on an analysis of how ballot measure one will impact the State of Alaska, its people, and oil production which he has been gracious enough to share at this event.

Did this change your view of Ballot Measure 1 at all?

At this event the Economics Club was joined by another esteemed member of UAA's faculty, Dr. Mouhcine Guettabi. During the presentation Dr. Guettabi expalins what economic impact analysis is and some of the tools regional economists use to conduct it. After that he shares some of the results from a project he worked on evaluating different fiscal options for the state of Alaska before moving on to an informative Q&A.

Recently the Economics Club hosted the esteemed Dr. Kevin Berry, an expert on the interplay between pandemics and economics. Throughout his presentation he discusses the economics of social distancing, the SIR model of infectious disease, and how COVID19 has effected the environment. Please comment and tell us what you think.
