Tomorrow, June 5th, the Trump administration will announce the results of the latest oil and gas lease sale in the Arctic Refuge.

The coastal plain is the biological heart of the Arctic Refuge. It provides critical polar bear habitat, is home to millions of migratory birds and serves as the calving grounds for the Porcupine Caribou herd that Gwich’in communities have depended on for thousands of years.

This would be the third lease sale in the Refuge. The most recent sale drew zero bids.

As Galen Gilbert, first chief of Arctic Village Council, said: “We will continue to fight with every tool available to protect the Coastal Plain for our children and all future generations.”

Alaska Conservation Foundation supports the Indigenous leaders, legal advocates, and our partners including , fighting to protect the Arctic Refuge.

Let your representatives know the Arctic is expendable grounds for sale. For more information or to make a comment see our link in bio.

Happy Earth Day from our happy place to yours!

Behind every Alaskan landscape worth protecting are those fighting to protect it. For over 45 years, we’ve been the trusted bridge between passionate donors and the grassroots leaders on the front lines. Protecting Alaska for countless generations means investing in the people fighting for it today and the leaders who will take their place tomorrow.

ACF coordinates programs like Arctic Youth Ambassadors, now in its fifth cohort, amplifying the voices of Alaskans in critical dialogues about the future of the Arctic.

Today, we invite you to use your power to ensure Alaska remains beautiful and abundant for generations to come.

Congratulations to Yup’ik leader Alannah Acaq Hurley, who is the 2026 North American recipient of the Goldman Environmental Prize.  Known as the “Green Nobel, ” the honors grassroots environmental activists around the world. Recognizing individuals for their extraordinary efforts to protect and enhance the natural environment—awarding heroes from each of the world’s six inhabited continental regions.

As the Executive Director of Alannah Acaq Hurley led a campaign that, against all odds, stopped the proposed Pebble Mine in Alaska’s Bristol Bay region.  The tremendous victory safeguards Bristol Bay and its greater watershed—encompassing 25 million acres of wilderness, rivers, and wetlands and home to the largest wild salmon runs in the world—from the construction of what would have been North America’s largest open-pit mine.

Alaska Conservation Foundation honored Alannah’s commitment to “people over profit” in 2024 with the Caleb Pungowiyi Award for Outstanding Achievements by an Alaska Native Organization or Individual.

We also want to recognize this year’s Goldman Environmental Prize prize recipients as the first all-women cohort. Acknowledging the frequently under recognized role women play in frontline environmental leadership worldwide. The native traditions of matriarchy can be seen far and wide if we look close enough.

Watch the link in our story to learn more about the important work Alannah Acaq Hurley is doing for Alaskan lands, waters, and ways of life.

It may be “breakup” season here on the Turnagain Arm, but it’s the perfect time to come together for Alaska Impact Days in the hopes of a brighter future for our Alaskan communities.

We focused on what a bold commitment to community looks like here in Alaska. Impact investing offers unique solutions and an opportunity to expand beyond traditional philanthropy and banking. We envision an Alaska where investment strengthens rather than extracts from local economies.

Thank you to all who spoke, attended, planned and supported. And a big thanks to our sponsors.

What an IMPACT each person and our time together have had already.. But Tami our timekeeper says it’s 5 o’clock and time to STOP working.

The Trump administration is fast-tracking Deep-sea mining. Possibly opening up more than 113 million acres of Alaskan waters to seabed mining. The effort is part of the Trump administration’s broader push in mineral extraction.

Deep-sea mining is not yet a commercial industry and faces regulatory uncertainty and scientific warnings about long-term environmental damage to fisheries and fragile ocean ecosystems.

There are devastating consequences to our global climate due to loss of biodiversity, disruption of carbon sinks, release of stored methane, and the weakening of the biological pump.

The proposed lease area—larger than California—includes ecologically sensitive waters near The proposed lease area—larger than California—covers sensitive Alaskan waters from the Aleutian Islands to the Arctic, including areas already off-limits to bottom trawling.

The proposal threatens food security, marine wildlife, and cultural traditions central to Alaska Native communities.

The deep sea is considered the oldest and largest biome on earth. The rush to extract more mineral resources in and around Alaska could reshape life far beyond this state.

Last week Northwest Boreal Partnership and partners organized a cross-border Guardians gathering in Fairbanks, AK. Creating a space collaboration across the boreal regions of Alaska & Northwest Canada. The Northwest Boreal Partnership is part of ACF’s Northern Latitudes Partnerships, which supports Indigenous-led conservation across approximately 70% of Alaska through three regional partnerships.

During the 3 days together Indigenous leaders, community members, researchers, and agency partners built relationships, stronger networks and trust. The event focused on common ground including, Climate Adaptation, Tribal Conservation Districts, Indigenous Stewardship Programs, Wildland Fire, Food Sovereignty, Co-Management Tools,
Indigenous Protected & Conserved Areas (IPCA’s), Cross-Border Collaborations and Research.

Guided by both Indigenous and western science, participants shared land management strategies as well as data collection tools highlighting the importance of Indigenous data sovereignty. We learned from Elders about relationships with animals and changes experienced on their land, while being lead in language and thought by youth. A powerful new crop of young leaders.

Indigenous Guardians have spoken the language of their land for millions of years and must be leaders of its management going forward. Many thanks to all who joined us, supported, shared, sang, danced and inspired.
