"Dena'ina Ełnena" is now on view at the Anchorage Museum.

For thousands of years, the Dena’ina people have lived in and cared for the land we now call Southcentral Alaska. Their traditional homeland stretches from the Kenai Peninsula, north beyond Talkeetna, and west to the Upper Stony River—covering more than 41,000 square miles, including the area now known as Anchorage.

This new installation features murals by Iñupiaq artist and graphic designer Katie O’Connor, spotlighting three important places to the Eklutna Dena’ina: Susni Kaq’ (Susitna River), Dgheyaytnu (Ship Creek), Idluytnu (Eklutna).

Alongside the murals, you’ll find Dena’ina words describing elements of the local ecosystems—many from the Upper Cook Inlet dialect spoken in Eklutna. These names do more than locate; they connect language, culture, and place. When we learn Indigenous place names, we begin to see and understand this region through the knowledge and relationships that have always existed here.

Visit "Dena'ina Ełnena" in the Gottstein Learning Center on the second floor, West Wing.
