Chugachmiut Heritage Preservation

Chugachmiut Heritage Preservation This page is an effort to keep the people of the Chugach region informed on the actions of the Heritage Preservation team here at Chugachmiut.

Our vision is to revitalize the traditional Chugach Native culture and language. The goal is to make Sugpiaq/ Eyak history and heritage a part of the regular school curriculum with support and direction from our Elders’ traditional ecological knowledge (TEK).

Chenega Day is the anniversary of the 1964 Good Friday Earthquake, which devastated the original village of Chenega. We remember the lives lost and honor the strength of the families who carried Chenega forward, preserving their stories, culture, and traditions across generations.

Cama’i. We observe Chenega Day tomorrow, March 27, and share this flyer in remembrance with the Chenega community.

This day marks the anniversary of the 1964 Good Friday Earthquake, which devastated the original village of Chenega. We remember the lives lost and honor the strength of the families who carried Chenega forward, preserving their stories, culture, and traditions across generations.

Chenega Day is a time for reflection, remembrance, and honoring resilience. Memory eternal.

Quyanaa to Chenega residents for preparing and sharing this flyer.
