The Armed Services YMCA enhances the lives of military members and their families in spirit, mind, and body through programs relevant to the unique challenges of military life. The proud heritage of YMCA service in the military setting usually is associated with the year 1861, when dedicated YMCA volunteers took to the battlefields of the Civil War alongside America’s uniformed young men. It was t

he year that Abraham Lincoln commended YMCA leaders for their “benevolent undertaking for the benefit of the soldiers.”

The YMCA’s broader volunteer service to the Armed Forces, however, is tied to the month of April, 1861, when a handful of YMCA members sought voluntarily to provide helpful services - by whatever means they could - to men in uniform. Later, growing numbers of volunteers accompanied them to the battlefields. Later that year representatives of 15 YMCAs came together to coordinate the YMCA’s overall efforts to alleviate the suffering of the sick and wounded. The organization created by that meeting was called The United States Christian Commission, whose initial purpose was to provide spiritual and physical comfort to soldiers. President Lincoln wrote to YMCA leaders, “I sincerely hope your plan may be as successful in execution, as it is just and generous in conception.”

🎉 Registration for our 2026 Father-Daughter Gala is still open!

Join the ASYMCA as we celebrate the bonds between parents and children at our annual Father-Daughter Gala! Guests will enjoy an evening of dancing, music, food, and fun.

💲 Fee: $25 per person
📅 When: Friday, October 2, 2026
📍 Where: Arctic Warrior Events Center
⭐️ Eligibility: Daughters of active duty military members and their fathers or father-figures (tickets required for each attendee)

JBER Winter Gear Up registration still has a few spots left! ❄️🧤🧥

In partnership with Delta Air Lines & Big Ray's, we’re helping our school-age military children gear up for winter!

❄️The ASYMCA's annual Winter Gear Up program provides winter weather gear to dependents of active-duty military members stationed in Alaska. Registration for each child is required.

⭐In-person Eligibility:
This program is open to military children (pre-K4 through grade 12) of active-duty military members of all ranks permanently stationed in Alaska. Military ID is required. Select your exact duty station and preferred sign-up time when you register!

School is back in session, which means our Child Watch and Children’s Waiting Room have updated back-to-school hours! 🚌✏️

Our Child Watch program provides short-term, drop-in childcare for children ages 6 months–12 years, offering up to two hours of supervised care in fun, kid-friendly spaces.

Back-to-school hours!
⏰ Monday-Friday: 9:00 AM–2:00 PM

Children must be pre-registered before using Child Watch and Children’s Waiting Room. Visit our website to pre-register today! This program is open to dependents of active-duty service members.
