The Middle and Upper Kuskokwim Watershed Coalition works to bring communities, Tribes, and partners together around one shared goal: protecting the health of the Kuskokwim watershed for current and future generations.

Our work includes supporting water-quality monitoring, sharing information with communities, building partnerships, increasing local involvement, and helping strengthen long-term stewardship throughout the Middle and Upper Kuskokwim region.

The Coalition is still growing, and one of our biggest priorities is making sure the people who live along the river have a voice in the work being done.

The Kuskokwim connects all of us and protecting it takes all of us. 💧

Healthy fish habitat starts with healthy water. 🐟💧

Fish need more than just water to survive, they need the right conditions.

Water temperature affects how much oxygen is available. Dissolved oxygen is essential for fish survival. Clean spawning areas give eggs and young fish a better chance. Connected streams allow fish to move between feeding, spawning, and refuge areas. Healthy riverbanks help provide shade, reduce erosion, and protect the habitat below.

That’s why water monitoring is so important.

One water sample tells us what conditions look like at that moment. But when we return to the same places year after year, we begin building a record that can help us recognize changes in the river over time.

Sometimes monitoring doesn’t show a major change and that information is important too. It gives us a baseline to compare future conditions against.

Protecting our fish doesn’t begin when they reach our nets.

It begins with protecting the water, streams, riverbanks, and habitat they depend on throughout their entire life cycle.

Healthy water. Healthy habitat. Healthy fish.

💧Water-Quality Wednesday💧

The people who spend time on the river often notice changes first.

Changes in water level, clarity, temperature, erosion, or fish behavior can tell us a lot about what is happening in the watershed. Local knowledge and community observations are an important part of understanding and protecting the Middle and Upper Kuskokwim.

A little update from the Middle-Upper Kuskokwim Watershed Coalition!

Our work is centered around something that connects all of us, the Kuskokwim River.

The Coalition brings communities, Tribes, schools, researchers, and other partners together to share knowledge, strengthen relationships, and support the long-term health of our watershed.

We’ve been working to make information about the Kuskokwim easier to find and understand, while also making sure the voices of our communities are part of the story. Our website includes:

• Research and resources about the Kuskokwim
• Community stories from Elders, youth, and residents
• Information about watershed and salmon projects
• The history of subsistence management in Alaska
• Water temperature and environmental resources
• Updates about the Coalition and our coordinators

We are also continuing community outreach and preparing for upcoming water-sampling work. There is still a lot to do, but every conversation, partnership, and piece of information helps us better understand and care for the river we all depend on.
