Tragically, Ayanna Morgan was among the 42,987 individuals who lost their lives to gun violence last year, a statistic that she never expected to be part of.
The reality is that Black, Indigenous, and Latinx communities experience disproportionately higher rates of homicides compared to their white counterparts. Additionally, these communities are more likely to be victims of fatal shootings by police and by someone from within their own community.
These issues are deeply entrenched in systemic inequalities caused by generations of discriminatory policies, systemic racism, and police violence. The cycle of violence within Black communities, particularly against women, has become more rampant than ever before.
To address these problems, we must implement comprehensive solutions that address the root causes of violence. This includes investing in education, mental health services, and community programs that can help deter gun violence before it occurs. It’s essential to recognize and address the interlocking factors that contribute to violence, such as race, gender, and socioeconomic status.
Only then can we work to eradicate the evils of the world along with creating a more just society for everyone.
